Judicial Appointments Commission – Communications Officer – Executive Officer (EO)

The role

We are looking for a Communications Officer to join the Diversity & Engagement Team. The Communications Officer will support our Communications Managers and Senior Strategic Communications Manager with the delivery of our day-to-day communications work. As an independent public body, the Judicial Appointments Commission is responsible for designing, planning, and running recruitment campaigns to select judges in the courts and tribunals, up to and including the High Court, as well as non-legal tribunal members. With a new recruitment campaign launched every couple of weeks, and statutory responsibilities to make sure we select candidates on merit and through fair and open competition, it’s essential that our processes are robust, inclusive, and attractive to candidates from the widest possible backgrounds. It’s also essential that our audiences and stakeholders understand our work and our commitment to support a diverse judiciary that represents the society it serves. 

As a Communications Officer you will play a vital role in helping us to achieve that ambition. The role works closely with our Communications Managers and operational teams to support the development of communications campaigns that explain and promote our busy programme of selection activity. From helping candidates access the support they need to consider a judicial career, to sharing relevant and timely information across the organisation, you will play an essential part in the delivery of our core functions.

Working across a range of channels, you will prepare newsletters, monitor our media coverage and ensure our website, social media channels and internal communications products meet the needs of our audiences. 

You should relish the challenge of working in a small but dynamic team, collaborating with colleagues who are passionate about the JAC’s mission. 

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to a Communications Manager, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Daily monitoring of the team mailbox, escalating queries to the relevant Communications Manager
  • Support for JAC colleagues including website, intranet updates and social media content
  • Media and social media monitoring, escalating queries to the Senior Strategic Communications Manager
  • Compiling regular newsletters for internal and external audiences
  • Management and maintenance of JAC stakeholder lists, including building relationships with stakeholders through email updates
  • Monitoring the ‘life cycle’ of exercises across all JAC teams to support swift retrieval of statistics
  • Support the drafting of the Annual Report alongside the Communications Manager and Senior Strategic Communications Manager
  • Lead on information storage

We are a small team who work collaboratively, and the Communications Officer may need to get involved in other projects and work beyond what is listed above to support the wider D&E team (and wider organisation).

While the JAC is an independent executive non-departmental public body, we are considered an arms-length body of the Ministry of Justice and share many of the same policies, processes and terms and conditions as Civil Servants employed directly by the MoJ. This includes being part of the MoJ pay remit, enabling transferees from other government departments to retain their continuity of service and Civil Service Pension arrangements. 

JAC staff are currently working in a hybrid way with a minimum of 2 days per week in the office in line with Government policy. The JAC offices are located at Clive House, Petty France, London, SW1H 9AJ.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.

Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.

For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.

Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.

MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade, will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.

All candidates who are currently in receipt of Mark Time / Pay Protection should ensure they are familiar with the new policy on permanent and temporary promotion which can be found on the employee intranet.

Flexible working hours
