Academic Supervisor - Creative Research Project Level 6
Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance is a forward thinking, contemporary and world-class Higher Education Institution with a vision to redefine the conservatoire for the 21st century.
The Faculty of Music seeks to appoint a suitably qualified candidate to an hourly paid, part-time permanent academic management and teaching position with effect from 1 September 2023.
Supervision Hours: negotiated yearly – x3 hours per student allocated.
Creative Research Project Level 6
The Creative Research Project provides opportunity to extend and apply your research skills, both practice-based and text-based that have been developed through the first two years of the programme. There are two developmental focuses within this module; the creation and development of collaboratively devised Musical Theatre work, in which you will develop your research skills in order to apply emerging skills of making musical theatre in a collaborative setting, and your own exploration of an aspect of Musical Theatre practice that interests you, communicating your findings in a manner and medium appropriate to the subject of enquiry. Work must focus on some aspect of PRACTICE in order to create the potential for your research directly to impact on your own practice as a creative individual in the Musical Theatre industry.
Supervision activity may include:
Briefing sessions on how to approach the Creative Research Project
Tutorials with your Personal Project Supervisor
Information retrieval and research skills (Library)
Lectures to support the development of work
The aims of the module are:
To enable you to research and explore aspects of Musical Theatre practice in depth;
To develop your understanding and exploration of the interrelationship of theory and practice in research processes and to extend your skill in these areas;
To enable you to communicate your findings in a mode and register appropriate to the topic and level;
To extend your evaluative skills regarding arts-based research methods and outcomes.
The successful candidate will represent an important addition to Faculty expertise in Musical Theatre, and will join us at a time of demonstrable growth to, and increasing recognition of, the learning opportunities provided by the Department of Musical Theatre.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of curriculum, in particular contributing to research / study skills teaching and personal project supervision as appropriate (initially at ISP Foundation (pre-degree) and BA (Hons) (undergraduate) levels). They should ideally have proven research expertise in musical theatre &/or an allied subject area. Applications from early career researchers seeking their first formal teaching position are strongly encouraged.
Following success in the Institution’s first formal research submission (REF) our strategic priorities are the development of a practice-led research hub with specialisms in creative practice/performance, performance science and performance pedagogy as well as text-based research in our disciplines; the further integration of our research and knowledge exchange/public engagement programmes; and increasing our research collaborations, seeking particularly to engage international partners. The Faculty of Music is committed to encouraging research-informed teaching; you will be encouraged to develop your skills in line with this ethos.
Educated to at least Master’s degree-level (or equivalent), you will have proven higher music education teaching experience, strong or emerging research interests in musical theatre, outstanding communication and organisational abilities, excellent IT skills and the capability to deal with a busy and varied workload, within a highly creative environment.
