The urgent care service here at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre houses the combined 24/7 Same Day Emergency Care Unit and our 0800-1800 Intermediate care area; Rapid Access, together with our telephone patient advice line. Within the unit we provide a dedicated service for patients experiencing acute side effects related to their solid tumours and haematological conditions and treatment, as well as providing supportive therapies such as blood transfusions, electrolyte replacements and procedures such as ascitic drainage. This is a fast-paced expanding service where staff can develop and flourish, while enjoying a positive work-life balance.

We have an exciting opportunity for either an experienced or trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join our committed, positive, and supportive team in the urgent care service. Within your role you will be working closely with other members of the nursing, nurse practitioner and medical team to provide expert care to patients in person and over the telephone. You will be able to take an appropriate history and physical assessment and formulate a management plan as well as interpreting and requesting investigations with the support of our senior medical colleagues. You will be expected to provide strong expert clinical leadership on the unit and support other members of the team, acting as a positive role-model promoting best clinical and professional practice.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a skilled, autonomous practitioner as part of the Multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality care to patients. The post holder will work across divisional and professional boundaries, encouraging inter-disciplinary working for the benefit of improved patient outcomes and efficient use of resources. The nurse practitioner working in the acute assessment unit at Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre will be responsible for the safe triage, assessment and treatment for patients who attend the unit. All patients who are currently having anti-cancer therapies at BHOC have access to the acute service for advice and management of side effects of treatment.

The role is mainly clinical, however when fully trained there is the opportunity to focus on Education, Research and Audit as the rota allows, normally 7.5 hours per month.

Post graduate courses in physical assessment and history taking, diagnostic reasoning and non-medical prescribing are not essential but would be desirable. As well as this evidence of competence demonstrating applied clinical experience following completion of these courses. If training you will be a Band 6 however when qualified you will be a Band 7.
