Wood Applied Intelligence (AI) is currently recruiting for a Senior Alarm Management / Rationalisation Engineer with a strong track record as an Automation Engineer, with experience in alarm management and chairing alarm rationalisation meetings to directly support effective delivery of the automation control and instrumentation design content on a range of projects.
Wood AI provides a wide range of solutions leveraging real-time data and automation solutions globally and across multiple industrial markets. As an independent integrator, we provide operational technology (physical and digital) to connect, control and optimise process and manufacturing facilities, as well as supporting other Wood Offices for automation scope, where required.
Whilst this role can be based anywhere in the UK, mobility and travel to customer sites and face to face meetings with colleagues will be expected as required.

The Principal Automation Engineer will be an integral member of the AI Engineering Team providing work within project teams or seconded to clients helping us deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients.
Responsibilities / Duties

  • Provide end user consultancy for alarm management in compliance with the ISA-18.2 and IEC 662682 standards and implement alarm management software
  • Benchmark alarm system performance through software tools and operator interview
  • Lead the development of alarm management philosophy documents
  • Organize, lead, and facilitate alarm rationalization
  • Preparation of Alarm Rationalization Database and related reference materials
  • Facilitate Rationalization Meetings
  • Document alarm management guidelines
  • Support update summary analysis of alarm priority by type
  • Support Alarm Rationalization Final Documentation
  • Supporting Alarm management activities
  • Acts in Lead technical and supervisory roles in project definition, development, and execution
  • Ability to supervise, manage, motivate and mentor technical professionals
  • Contribute in the preparation, execution, and handover of completed Automation work scope.
  • Defines and executes Automation and Controls deliverable requirements and system design and integration
  • Coordinates with project discipline and senior engineers to ensure correct implementation of the design for their engineering specialty and coordinates the work of engineers within their specialty
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to project delivery teams during system design, implementation, and testing
  • Applies integration concepts to a wide variety of systems and across multiple vendor platforms
  • Agile, with ability to adapt and troubleshoot solutions
  • Participate in site visits, project review meetings, design reviews and other workshops as required
  • Provides application expertise on the configuration, database and / or programming activities
  • Liaison with the Client (internal or external) ensuring that their needs are met
  • Ensuring Quality Assurance systems and procedures
  • Provide appropriate HSSE leadership including compliance with site and office safety requirements and technical/design safety requirements
  • Provide technical input and support to proposals as required


Skills / Qualifications

  • Minimum BSc Degree or demonstratable equivalent good level experience
  • Substantial automation and control delivery experience in highly regulated industries
  • A proven track record within the Oil and Gas, Lifesciences, Petrochemical or similar industries
  • Provides expertise in Alarm Management and Facilitate / Chair Alarm Rationalisation workshops
  • Significant experience of at least one DCS system including but not limited to:
    • Honeywell Experion
    • Honeywell TPS
    • Foxboro IA
    • Emerson DeltaV
    • Emerson Ovation
    • ABB
  • Experience of Project documentation and change management methodologies
  • Familiar with Software development lifecycles associated with ICSS design, implementation, testing and commissioning
  • Resolves specialty related engineering issues by applying accepted principles, codes, and standards
  • Be able to review ICSS Hardware design, P&IDs, Cause and Effects etc
  • Skilled at databases and data manipulation
  • Be technically sound and able to work mainly unsupervised in the preparation of deliverables
  • Have a confident Client-facing manner, and be diligent, confident, collaborative and highly motivated when working as part of a Client's team, together with Wood colleagues, or independently
  • Experience scoping work, identifying key tasks, packages and developing resourcing / time estimates
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering practices and economic principles, calculation methods, design details, international codes and standards, procedures, and specifications
  • Experience of brownfield sites including turnarounds, shutdowns, and commissioning
  • Be able to work accurately, flexibly and to integrate their work with other disciplines, whilst working to tight programme and budget constraints
  • Be able to travel and visit offices, operational works and construction sites as required
  • Demonstrate a practical appreciation of safe systems of work
  • Excellent communication skills with all stakeholders and a pro-active approach to solving problems and getting the job done
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
