We are looking to recruit an Assistant Finance Manager (AFM), who is seeking a fresh challenge or a candidate with relevant experience looking to progress to the next stage of their career. The role will be specifically supporting the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) Finance sub group of the Newham Finance Service but given the generic nature of this role there will be opportunities to work in all areas of the service over time.

Newham is a vibrant inner-city borough with excellent transport links to the rest of London and South-East England, including Kent, Essex, Surrey and Middlesex. The AFM will play a key role in improving financial management & control, and accountability across the organisation, and enable effective proactive financial planning. There are a number of AFMs, all focussed on ensuring finance and organisational transformation is delivered efficiently and effectively, at speed.

We are looking for innovative individual who can lead by example and help build a sustainable, highly effective, service that delivers exceptional Finance support for the Pensions Committee and the £1,8bn Fund.

The Job Description includes details of the role's purpose and responsibilities. Specific areas of responsibility include:

  • Ability to interpret financial data/information, apply logic and judgement
  • Direct line management of up to 4 FTEs (currently 1 FTE made up of two job shares)
  • Maintain and close the LGPS Pension Fund Accounts in line with corporate deadlines
  • Good communication influencing and presentation skills
  • Support the wider aspects of the closure of accounts process ensuring relevant guidance and legislation are adhered to
  • Undertaking the impact assessment of complex reports, policies and procedures; and
  • Full member of CCAB (preferably CIPFA) or part qualified (AAT equivalent with relevant experience in the sector).

About Us

The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country.
