Blaise Veterinary Referral Centre
Up to £34,000pa DOE plus benefits and up to £5000 relocation allowance
As the opening date for our new purpose-built hospital, Blaise Veterinary Referral Centre, approaches, we are delighted to now be accepting applications for Ward Nurses to join our team. This is a full-time position to be worked over an on/off shift pattern with a healthy work-life balance in mind. This is a clinical role within the nursing team, working on both general patient care and isolation wards, and reporting into the Wards Clinical Team Leader.

At IVC Evidensia, we have over 100 referral sites that have joined our UK & Ireland network over the years. Blaise Veterinary Referral Centre is our first Multidisciplinary Specialist Referral Site that we have built from the ground up. This creates a unique opportunity for you to be a part of our journey from the very beginning. Situated in Longbridge, Birmingham, it is set to be one of the largest, multi-disciplinary referral hospitals in the UK and will have the capacity to treat up to 10,000 pets per year.
Sustainability has been a key priority for us, and we have included several green and wellbeing initiatives in the hospital in line with our Positive Pawprint strategy across the group. The hospital will be one of the largest in the UK at over 36,000 sq ft, with the capacity to treat up to 10,000 pets per year. From the site we will provide specialist led multi-discipline veterinary referrals and a 24-hour emergency care service for pet owners across the Midlands. The site has easy access from the A38 through Longbridge and is part of the West Longbridge regeneration project. The site has been designed to ensure that an open plan collegiate working environment is created to support the positive and supportive culture that is integral to us.

The ward nurses are responsible for the in-patient care of all patients housed in the general and isolation wards and must adhere to hospital infection control procedures to minimise the risk of hospital acquired infections. The Ward nurse will be expected to carry out comprehensive and holistic in-patient care to patients from all the hospital disciplines which may include patients receiving cytotoxic agents. Patient care will include the administration of medication (which may include cytotoxic agents), patient monitoring, physiotherapy, catheter and drain care, and provision of nutrition via a range of methods. Ward nurses will be expected to work to a very high standard adopting an open and supportive team approach and using excellent communication skills.
Duties will include…
To carry out all responsibilities to the highest possible standards and as scheduled, with the support of Ward ACAs.
Placement of intravenous catheters for the delivery of intravenous fluids and continuous rate infusions as well as the procurement of samples for laboratory testing.
Maintain exemplary nursing notes and communicate clearly and in a timely manner with the clinicians about a patient’s progress and raise any concerns.
With the support of the Ward ACAs, the Ward Nurse will ensure the wards are clean and tidy and that each patient’s kennel/cage/housing is comfortable and promotes the patient’s well-being.
Relevant experience and personal attributes:
You must be a Registered Veterinary Nurse with a strong interest in inpatient nursing
A relevant qualification would be desirable but is not essential.
A keen interest in working towards clinical excellence in inpatient nursing is a must.
Previous experience in a referral hospital is desirable, but not essential. However, you must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical knowledge and practical competence.

Working pattern
We will welcome full or part time applications for this position. Shift times will cover dayshift, backshift and nightshifts on rotation and includes weekends and bank holidays. The standard rotation will be a short set of longer shifts followed by a number of days off to compensate.
