Job Description

Bloomberg is looking for a Breaking News Editor in London. Bloomberg is one of the world's biggest financial news organizations, leading the way in covering everything that impacts markets, power and policy. Bloomberg's Breaking News team is fast and innovative, and our mission is to deliver this news to readers as quickly as possible, enabling our audience to stay a step ahead.

You'll be a part of the UK & Global Watch Breaking News team, tackling the deluge of company filings, working with automated tools, and writing news that moves markets.

As a Breaking News editor you will watch the constant flow of information from a range of sources including social media, other news organizations and company filings; use strong news judgement to independently decide what actually has potential to make an impact; and relay that information in headlines and dispatches as quickly as possible, as clearly as possible. You're also a crucial part of making the newsroom work together, leveraging your network to kick everyone else into gear. You'll take the lead when mega-acquisitions are announced out of the blue, when rockets are fired in the Middle East or when earthquakes threaten populous cities. You'll help cover the late-night twists and turns of US politics and be the first to notice when a newsmaker's tweet could impact on trading decisions.

Breaking News editors thrive in a high-pressure environment, aren't afraid to make split-second decisions, and love surprises. We work well with both people and technology. We understand what serious market participants are looking for amid the daily deluge of information and we're adept at separating the wheat from the chaff on social media. If this sounds like you, we want you to join our Breaking News team.

We'll trust you to:

  • Send accurate, clear flash headlines that move markets
  • Write first versions of breaking stories with clarity and authority
  • Decide when to act with urgency, and when we need to take a breath
  • Stay poised and focused in a fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Unearth news from traditional and new-media sources
  • Stay on top of major news stories and trends
  • Collaborate with Bloomberg reporters and editors across EMEA and the world
You'll need to have:
  • A minimum of 2 years of journalism experience
  • Experience working in a real-time news environment
  • A keen interest in financial markets, business or economies
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English
  • The ability to write breaking news with clarity
  • Familiarity with social media and ability to evaluate the credibility of information from such sources
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • A deep interest in major news stories from all around the world
  • Flexibility with hours and assignments. News is unpredictable!
We’d love to see:
  • Fluency in another language
  • Experience in a financial news organization or a business desk
