Job Description

We are seeking a confident and engaging individual with excellent communication skills to provide inspiring leadership to two small sister charities.

The new Charity Director will have the knowledge and experience required to develop and implement a new strategy which will drive a meaningful step-change in fundraising activity, with the
goal of launching an inaugural fundraising campaign in 2021/22.


Working with a small team, they will need to be as comfortable rolling their sleeves up in the office as they would be in leading conversations with a Royal Patron. An understanding of and empathy with health issues and the needs of patients with scoliosis would be an advantage as well the ability to lead operational change and review efficiencies. The post holder will be articulate and influential and be proficient at presenting to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and partners.


The role is ideal for someone Head of/similar management level experience who is looking to step into their first senior leadership role in the charity sector. 

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Provide visible, compelling leadership of SAUK and BSRF and demonstrate sincere empathy with their missions.
  • Take responsibility for business plans, budget formulation and management, resourcing, organisation and operational planning and delivery of performance management.
  • Working with the Chair and Board of Trustees/Directors, create, implement and deliver a new medium to long term strategy for SAUK and BSRF.
  • To be ambitious for the work of both SAUK and BSRF in order to achieve their objectives, vision and mission, ensuring a focus on achieving their strategic priorities.
  • To be responsible for driving key projects and new initiatives in line with strategy.
  • Delegate to, support and empower the team in delivery of their work.
  • Ensure that the recruitment, management, training and development of staff, SAUK Regional Representatives and other volunteers reflects good employment practice and creates an environment of employee engagement.
  • Lead a thorough review of charity operations for SAUK and BSRF, including policies and procedures, ensuring that these are legally compliant, fit to support the charity’s ambitions and able to underpin a new strategy.

Finance and Fundraising

  • To be responsible for the financial health of both charities including overseeing an effective programme of income generation.
  • To be responsible for developing and managing a sustainable budget, maximising opportunities to develop new income streams and create efficiencies. Ensure strong financial controls are in place.
  • Oversee bookkeeping, reporting and preparation of accounts, as well as the submission of the annual return to the Charity Commission and Companies House.
  • Develop, implement and deliver an inaugural fundraising strategy which underpins the objectives of both charities and their wider strategies.
  • Create a new case for support which will form the basis of a fundraising campaign for both charities. ▪ Lead the identification and development of new income streams e.g. trusts and foundations, regular giving and more.
  • Identify and leverage digital fundraising opportunities, working with the Communications Officer to develop this further.
  • Work with the team to understand, segment and engage the current SAUK and BSRF donor bases/membership.
  • Ensure stewardship of donors and trusts and that cultivation plans are put in place and implemented.
  • To manage a portfolio of donors and potential donors in order to canvass, develop long term relationships and maximise income across all streams; donations, events, advertising, sponsorship etc.
  • To be responsible for achieving the income target for your portfolio of donors and supporting staff to achieve these targets.
  • To have overall responsibility for the donation income (pre, during and post) for each event and together with other staff responsible for achieving the overall income target for each event.

External Relations and Membership Engagement

  • Be the external face of SAUK and BSRF; champion and effectively raise the profile of both charities.
  • Work with the team on the project management of the biennial International Phillip Zorab Symposium, liaising with relevant clinicians and experts, and industrial representatives.
  • Work with the Communications Officer to position SAUK as a leading voice on scoliosis and the primary supporter for those with the condition.
  • Foster strong relationships with relevant external stakeholders, including key clinicians and the new Royal Patron.
  • Build strong relationships with Regional Representatives and other volunteers.
  • Identify, develop and implement initiatives that enhance the value of services SAUK provides to its members.
  • Work with the Communications Officer to enhance the value of services provided by the SAUK Regional Representatives and volunteers.
  • Alongside the rest of the staff, engage sensitively and empathetically with patients who contact SAUK via the Helpline. Governance and Compliance
  • To ensure that the Boards receive all necessary advice, guidance and information on matters relating to current performance, the short- and long-term future of SAUK and BSRF, regulatory and legal compliance, and other appropriate issues; and making sure that such advice, guidance and information are timely, honest, balanced and relevant
  • To ensure that the Boards are given timely and accurate information in order to perform their duties.
  • Ensure that complete records of all Board meetings are signed off and archived.
  • To ensure that the major risks to which the charities are exposed are reviewed regularly by the Board and that internal systems have been established to mitigate these risks.
  • Scan the external environment for changes that may affect the charities, advise the Trustees/Directors proactively and take necessary action.
  • Completion of reports and surveys required from time to time by the Charity Commission and the Association of Medical Research Charities.
