Role Description


This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-moving, award-winning, cleantech startup as a permanent, on-site Surface chemist and non-scientist. Becoming part of the team will put you at the forefront of innovative enzymatic biofuel cell research and development through meticulous experimental design and execution.


Your role will focus on optimising bioelectrode performance by a process of identifying the ideal surface coating reaction for maximum energy generation. You will also develop, analyse, and interpret data from electrochemistry and surface characterisation experiments and modify experiments as necessary to ensure they provide reliable and maximum power density of fuel cells. You will be a crucial part of a team that aims to develop innovative strategies for converting wastewater into renewable energy through cutting-edge chemical and biological technologies.


Key responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to grasp underlying concepts and derive answers to emerging questions.
  • Meticulous planning and execution of experiments to ensure the acquisition of reliable and accurate results.
  • Optimise surface functionalisation process and coatings to achieve highest efficiency of electrodes
  • Leverage advanced nanomaterials to optimise and increase the power density of fuel cells
  • Implementing electrochemical testing protocols, specifically designed to evaluate the power output of bio-fuel cells
  • Establishing a deeper understanding of system durability under normal and stressed conditions for feedback into biofuel cell manufacturing processes
  • Conduct all work in a safe manner according to our Health and Safety policies
  • Diligently record experimental procedures and laboratory results
  • Adhere to communications management and reporting structures to effectively collaborate with colleagues
  • Adhere to high standards of housekeeping throughout the work environment


Skills & Experience:


Required:


  • Minimum of an MSc in Surface Chemistry, Nanomaterial Science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience, with a demonstrated research record in surface chemistry and interface science.
  • In-depth knowledge of biocatalysts and bio-electrodes.
  • Extensive hands-on laboratory experience in surface modification and functionalisation of electrodes, including solution coating techniques and biocatalyst immobilisation.
  • Practical experience in a GLP chemistry laboratory, including log-keeping, and traceability management.
  • Effectively report and present experimental results, ensuring clear communication of findings and implications.


Preferred:

  • A strong interest or basic knowledge of biocatalysts and biocatalyst immobilisation
  • A PhD in a relevant field is highly desirable
