Job Description

The Actors' Benevolent Fund was founded in 1882 to help actors, actresses and stage managers experiencing hardship because of illness, injury, or old age.

The experience expected from applicants, as well as additional skills and qualifications needed for this job are listed below.

Today, this historic charity is at the point of transformational change.

In January 2023, the Members of the ABF voted to overhaul the charity's processes and procedures, enabling the organisation to provide help more people, more widely, across the profession. To facilitate this growth and change, the Trustees have committed to expanding charitable services and increasing expenditure to achieve their objectives. We aspire to be an agile organisation with the capacity and capability to evolve and meet the ever-changing needs of our beneficiaries.

Broadly, we envisage a more holistic approach to our charitable services, including activities such as mindfulness and wellbeing support, physical and mental healthcare, childcare, and safe spaces to supplement our existing grant-making activity. There are also opportunities to modernise our approach to grant giving.

In the context of the ABF's 143-year history, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

With this mandate for change, the Trustees are now seeking to appoint the charity's first ever Chief Executive Officer to harness the potential within the organisation and deliver transformational growth. A step-change is within reach for ABF activities a time when our profession desperately needs thoughtful, worthwhile, and impactful support.

Our new CEO will work with the Board and staff to create, review and deliver an ambitious strategy for impact, growth and sustainability, with corresponding business plans and objectives. Together, the CEO will generate, explore and test ideas for new charitable services to support the needs of the acting and stage management community. They will also create ABF's mission, vision and values whilst ensuring the long-term sustainability of the charity through effective governance and sound financial management.

We are seeking an inspiring, ambitious and compassionate senior leader with a passion for our community who brings;

  • Experience of leadership at CEO or senior director level
  • A track record of successfully managing significant organisational review and change
  • Authentic experience of developing staff
  • Experience of building personal relationships with a variety of stakeholders, at all levels
