Job summary Expected Shortlisting Date 24/09/2024 Planned Interview Date 02/10/2024 We have an opportunity at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) for a Clinical Scientist to be part of the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory. We have funding for a 1 year fixed term contract to cover maternity leave. You will need to be HCPC registered (although consideration will be given to applicants nearing HCPC registration). The post will be based at St Jamess University Hospital in Leeds, within the wider Department of Specialist Laboratory Medicine. The Biochemical Genetics laboratory provides screening services for the Foetal Anomaly Screening Program (FASP), Newborn Bloodspot Screening (NBBS) program, and a metabolic service for the complex investigation and monitoring of inborn errors of metabolism. These are all regional services involving much interaction with multidisciplinary teams from different trusts. Main duties of the job The post holder will support both screening programs with daily reporting of newborn and FASP screening results, liaison with relevant clinical teams and aiding in the development of these services. They will also be able to maintain general Biochemistry skills and knowledge by participating in the Duty Biochemist rotas. The post holder will work within an established Biochemical Genetics and Screening team of staff consisting of 4 Clinical Scientists (including this post), Specialist Biomedical Scientists and HBSWs. Support and training will be provided for all aspects of the role. Job description Job responsibilities This post is a Senior Scientist role within the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory within the Specialist Laboratory Medicine Department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. The post holder will need to develop and maintain specialised knowledge in Newborn Bloodspot and foetal anomaly screening. Under consultant/principal supervision, the post holder will be expected to take responsibility for provision of scientific services and clinical advisory services within these areas. The post holder will have an active role in service development in the above area. Person Specification Skills & behaviours Essential Good oral and written communication skills. To be an autonomous practitioner capable of dealing professionally with clinical colleagues including medical and nursing staff. Desirable Able to initiate and co-ordinate R & D activities Experience Essential Completion of pre-registration training program for Clinical Scientists. Desirable Previous working experience in Newborn Bloodspot or Foetal Anomaly Screening or Biochemical Genetics laboratory. Experience of using the following techniques/analysers: LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, AutoDELFIA, HPLC Qualifications Essential HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist (or close to obtaining registration).
