Clinical Nurse Specialist Vascular Access Unit Job In Cambridge

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Cambridge University Hospitals Vascular access Unit as a clinical Nurse Specialist. We are seeking a skilled and knowledgeable Vascular Access Nurse to join our specialised team. The successful candidate will need to be already competent and experienced in inserting PICC lines and will have a proven background in providing leadership with assessment, development and implementation of specialised nursing duties within the speciality.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as an expert practitioner, responsible for assessing, developing and implementing the specialist nursing care provided by the team.

They will frequently lead the shift, triaging referrals and leading and managing the team.

They will act as an autonomous practitioner, able to independently insert PICC lines, whilst working towards more complex line insertions.

Responsible for providing specialist advice and support to, and liaising with other staff. This includes the provision of specialist education and training.

Required to undertake research and lead clinical audits in own specialist area.

They will act as Deputy for the Lead CNS, supporting them in operationalising the strategic direction of the service.

Qualifications

Essential

• Registered Nurse educated to Degree level.
• Has completed an Advanced clinical assessment competency package.
• Has completed training in PICC line insertion
• Communication skills training.
• Evidence of continuous professional development (above mandatory training).

Desirable

• Research module.
• Master's Degree.
• Teaching Qualification.
• Has undertaken a leadership module.

Experience

Essential

• Significant experience in the Speciality of Vascular Access.
• Inserting a variety of venous access devices, PICC lines as a minimum.
• Formal teaching of patients and staff.
• Take Charge.
• Experience of initiating change.
• Has worked in a nurse-led service.
• Be an independent practitioner.

Desirable

• Inserting Hickman Lines and Portacaths.
• Managing and leading a team.
• Budgetary management.
• Consenting patients for treating.

Knowledge

Essential

• As a minimum is able to articulate basic anatomy and physiology in relation to the insertion of tunnelled lines.
• Complications associated with the insertion and ongoing care of, venous access devices.
• Best practice in relation to the care of patients with venous access devices.
• Of a range of tools that support service and practice development.
• Understanding of clinical governance in relation to the insertion and care of venous access devices.
• Understanding of vascular access patient pathways and how to support patients through this.
• Sound knowledge of team dynamics and how one influences this.

Desirable

• Advanced anatomy and physiology in relation to a range of venous access devices.
• Influencing key stakeholders.
• Knowledge of broader issues related to speciality - political and trust.

Skills

• Able to undertake complex cannulation and insert a range of venous access devices, as a minimum PICC lines.

• Ability to work unsupervised and to supervise others even when they are working remotely.
