Commercial Lawyer with some M&A experience - London, some remote working

Immediate start, 6 months fixed term role, possibly longer

This is an extremely interesting opportunity to work with the in-house legal team of a large PE-owned UK business. You will need to work from their central London office for around 3 days per week with the other 2 days working remotely.

We are looking for a capable commercial lawyer who has some M&A experience to support one of our clients. They provide a range of services to blue chip and public sector customers throughout the UK and beyond. Working for Ortolan Legal, but embedded with our client's in-house legal team, this is an opportunity to exercise your skills in an interesting business with a high quality and interesting workload. The project we need you for is likely to last for 6 months but could be extended. You will be advising on a range of commercial contracts from major framework services agreements to bespoke, one-off contracts for goods and services. You will also support some M&A transactions which may include share, business and asset disposals and acquisitions.

To be successful you will need the following skills and attributes:

  • You must be a qualified lawyer in the UK or another comparable jurisdiction. Lawyers with less than 4 years PQE are unlikely to have acquired the experience needed, but if you are exceptional, please convince us!
  • A strong technical legal background is a given and this is likely to have been gained with a leading practice, ideally with some in-house experience as well.
  • You will need to have a good understanding of and exposure to a wide range of complex commercial contracts.
  • Experience of M&A during your career is required although we are not looking for a "pure" corporate lawyer.
  • Importantly, you will need to be a good fit; so as well as being charismatic and personable, you will also be highly motivated, client focused and will have a demonstrably commercial approach with plenty of initiative.

For this assignment you will be working alongside our client's established in-house legal team. You will also find yourself working closely with stakeholders across the business and will be expected to deliver commercially successful outcomes which reflect the risk appetite of the business, while operating with a high degree of autonomy.

Ortolan Legal is a different law firm. We provide our clients with 'virtual' legal support and this is delivered exclusively by experienced solicitors. We give highly commercial and technically strong advice at a cost which compares extremely favourably with other, more conventional legal practices. Based in England and SRA authorised and registered, from a standing start in late 2009 we have grown strongly and our client base includes businesses ranging from FTSE 100 household names and multinational manufacturers to proprietor managed companies in sectors as diverse as FMCG, rail, logistics, training, manufacturing and high tech.

Our lawyers are supported by all the technology and resources they need to provide an excellent service. We are collegiate in the way we manage our business and we aim to put everyone in a position not only to achieve a great deal of job satisfaction, but also to really enjoy working with us.

The position is open now and we are keen to identify the right person and get them in place as soon as possible. So if this resonates with you, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

If you would like to know more, please send your CV in confidence to Nick Benson.

By applying for this role, your details will be sent to Ortolan People, who are acting as consultants for the hiring company. Ortolan People are engaged to provide recruitment support in processing applications. We will endeavour to respond to all applicants within three working days. Occasionally for roles with a very high volume of applicants, this may not be possible.

Hope started operating in 2013 and we had a lot of positions that we needed to fill. We initially relied on recruitment agencies and did a little bit of our own direct advertising, but wanted to explore more cost effective recruitment methods. We decided to try some “erecruiters” to see how they could help. Ortolan were by far the best and also the most cost effective of the suppliers that we tried and we now ask for their help with virtually all of our external recruitment needs, because they provide a very personal and tailored service and have people, rather than computers, working on their candidate searches and short lists. Using Ortolan has significantly reduced our expenditure on attracting candidates, but has also meant that we have had a much broader range of people applying to work for us than before. I’d highly recommend trying Ortolan to see how they can help you.
