Job overview We are looking for a highly motivated Registered Band 5 Nurse to join a supportive team on the Acute Stroke Unit. The Acute Stroke Unit is based at Royal Blackburn Hospital and has support of the dedicated stroke rehabilitation unit at Pendle Community Hospital. The successful candidate can be given the opportunity to rotate between the 2 units. Opportunity will also be given to attend our bespoke stroke study days as well as spending time shadowing the stroke specialist nurses and consultant nurses who work in our Emergency Department. Opportunity may also be available to partake in the stroke module held at Uclan. All patients admitted as a suspected stroke are seen in ED by the stroke team and admitted directly to the Acute Stroke Unit. The successful candidate will be offered support and guidance on managing complex stroke medication therapies such as thrombolysis care, Labetalol and GTN infusions and telemetry monitoring. Lots of exciting developments are happening now within our stroke services as we plan to become an Acute Stroke Centre Detailed job description and main responsibilities · Work collaboratively to provide excellent care in the clinical area as an effective member of the clinical team, ensuring a safe environment for patients and colleagues, taking responsibility for a group of patients, participating in assessments and maintaining appropriate departmental documentation. Ability to identify and discuss nursing problems with patients, relatives and colleagues.· Identify the priorities of nursing care for patients, ensuring realistic goals in care planning, working collectively with colleagues to ensure equipment and resource to deliver excellent nursing care, prioritizing as necessary.· Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, with safety and accuracy in line with Trust Policy.· Excellent communication with a variety of stakeholders, including, but not limited to, patients and their relatives, colleagues, social workers, paramedics and medical colleagues.· Assist senior staff in ensuring excellent patient care, which is planned and individualized to each patient.· Contribute to setting of standards in nursing care, evaluating the quality of care given to patients, measuring standards of excellent care through evaluation, under the direction of the senior nurse.· Ability to seek out knowledge of nursing and health, develop new skills and being able to apply that learning and findings to nursing practice.· Assess, instruct and demonstrate the needs of patients, relatives and colleagues to enable learning experiences with regard to nursing and prevention of illness. Person specification Experience Essential criteria • months post qualification work experience in nursing role•Basic management ability / ability to co-ordinate/manage shifts Qualifications Essential criteria •Registered Nurse verified by the NMC Desirable criteria •Evidence of continuous professional development. Skills/ Abilities Essential criteria •Clinical expertise, able to work on own initiative and evidence of sound decision making•Able to manage the care of a number of allocated patients and prioritise workload•A Safe practitioner in the administration of medicines and proficient at calculating mediation / drug doses.•Willing to/evidence of expanded clinical skills – IV drug administration, cannulation, phlebotomy etc.•Competent in safe moving and handling techniques.•Effective communicator and good interpersonal skills•Neat and coherent written skills with attention to detail and ability to write basic reports•Ability to delegate when appropriate Resource management skills•IT / keyboard skills andNumeracy ability to meet the demands of the role Desirable criteria •Able to present reasoned discussion.
