Construction Legal Counsel

We are delighted to be partnered with our client who is global leader in energy, working on pioneering sustainable and renewable projects. This role is remote and you can be based anywhere in the UK with one day travel required to their Birmingham office.

Job Description:

Our client is seeking a 2-5 PQE Construction Solicitor (must be E&W or Scots Law Qualified) with a proven track record in major construction and engineering projects. In this role, you will provide expert legal advice and support to the tendering and execution teams on a variety of legal and integrity issues, with a primary focus on high-value, complex tenders and projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Advisory: Provide expert legal advice and counsel on a broad range of issues affecting the business unit, particularly for tenders and projects within the complex power infrastructure portfolio.
  • Contract Drafting and Negotiation: Draft and negotiate standard forms of construction and EPC contracts, with a particular focus on NEC and preferably FIDIC contracts.
  • Risk Management: Identify legal issues, develop effective legal strategies, mitigation actions, and practical solutions to support business activities.
  • Tender Support: Review RFQs/ITTs from a legal perspective, contribute to tender preparation, risk identification, and negotiate contracts, framework agreements, and consortium agreements in coordination with internal stakeholders.
  • Project Execution Support: Assist contract managers and project teams during project execution, including handling claims to and from customers and subcontractors.
  • Dispute Resolution: Promote dispute avoidance and conflict management, liaising with external law firms when necessary.
  • Compliance: Contribute to the development and implementation of Group directives/instructions based on local legislation.
  • External Liaison: Manage and liaise with external service providers, including external legal counsel.
  • Training: Provide legal training and awareness, including on contract negotiation and integrity, to employees.

Qualifications:

  • You will be 2-5 PQE, as a guide, with proven experience in major construction and engineering projects.
  • Expertise in drafting and negotiating NEC contracts is essential, FIDIC is desireable but non-essential.
  • Strong understanding of legal issues related to high-value, complex tenders and projects.
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective legal strategies and solutions.
  • in managing external legal counsel and service providers.
