Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is responsible for providing mental health services for people of all ages across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, as well as providing some specialist services across the whole of North London and beyond. Since January 2011, the Trust also provides adult and children’s community health services in Enfield, following the transfer of Enfield Community Services from NHS Enfield.

This is a new post that has become available due to provision being increased in crisis services for Child and Adolescent Mental health Services in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. Across BEH, 1.8 Liaison posts have been created to provide Paediatric liaison psychiatry for young people presenting in crisis to the acute hospitals. This consultant will be working on site in the acute hospital at North Middlesex Hospital.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a key leadership role in terms of service development and the creation of an evolving service to CYP within the NCL. As such there will be significant liaison with partners in the NCL and NCEL.

Main duties of the job

Objectives of the post

  • To provide Paediatric liaison psychiatric service to North Middlesex Hospital and psychiatric input to CYP aged up to 18 years,
  • To provide clinical and professional leadership within the service.
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues in specialties in both trusts including Paediatric Consultants, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Paediatric Liaison Team (CAPPLT), Community CAMHS consultants and Out of Hours Nursing team.
  • To take part in management activities related to the post and the wider service within which it is embedded
  • To have an integral role in the development of the service and the development of clinical pathways and priorities of the wider service-line.
  • To provide Child and Adolescent Psychiatry liaison teaching and training to psychiatric trainees, MDT colleagues and hospital staff

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will provide clinical input to all pediatric and community patients under the age of 18 years presenting in A&E and pediatric wards.

Activities will include: 

  • Reviewing medical records, including relevant RIO, paediatric and primary care records as appropriate.
  • Discussion with referrers and other clinicians across paediatric and emergency departments; working with the NMUH multi-disciplinary paediatric and ED teams.
  • Clinical recommendations with reference to current mental health legislation.
  • Psychopharmacological treatment and brief eclectic psychological therapy
  • Advice to acute trust clinical staff regarding aspects of clinical care, including discussion about need for psychiatric referral
  • Taking the medical lead in relation to Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act assessments and reviews for patients under age 18 who are under the care of the acute hospital.
  • This role has no out-patient commitment, but there is potential for some flexibility in terms of undertaking some non-crisis work alongside the existing consultant.

Person specification

Qualifications & Experience

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • Certificate of Completion of Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Experience in Liaison Psychiatry
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Section 12(2) Approval. Eligible to act as RC for detained patients
  • Registered for the Continuing Professional Development Programme in the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Clinical Experience in at least three of the following patient groups: - Patients with physical and mental health co-morbidity/ - Self-harm and attempted suicide/ - Alcohol and substance misuse problems/ - Conversion and somatisation disorders (medically unexplained symptoms)/ - Pregnant and postnatal patients with serious mental illness/ - Delirium and Dementia
  • Experience in Older Adults Psychiatry
  • Training in the full range of effective therapeutic techniques to include psycho-education, medication and psychological therapies

Training & Teaching

  • Experience in multidisciplinary teaching
  • Qualification in teaching
  • Participation in dementia teaching programme for acute trust staff
  • Experience in designing educational programmes

Research

  • Co-operation in clinical research

Service Development

  • Experience in developing a service component relevant to Liaison Psychiatry
  • Experience of leading management projects within a mental health Trust

IT Experience & Skills

  • Experience in data gathering and management
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to use e-mail and Internet

Personal Skills

  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to the NHS
  • Highest level of integrity
