Job Description

We are seeking a Consultant Histopathologist with a special interest in Thoracic Pathology to join our dynamic Cellular Pathology Service at Southmead Hospital. This full-time post offers an exceptional opportunity to develop specialist diagnostic and research interests with enthusiastic support from the corresponding clinical teams. Applicants should have an established or developing interest in Thoracic Pathology.

This is a replacement post, and the department has recently implemented a digital pathology solution as part of a pathology network initiative. Once fully rolled out, this will provide opportunities for flexible working. Although this position is intended as a permanent role, consideration will be given to applicants wishing to take up the post on a fixed-term (minimum one year) basis. For those in a permanent post, a Recruitment and Retention Premium up to £20,000 is available, along with additional relocation and accommodation assistance.

The successful candidate will join a team of specialist Histopathologists within the department, supporting clinical services in Bristol and Weston. The service operates from a purpose-built Pathology centre at Southmead Hospital and continues to provide an Essential Services Laboratory at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The Cellular Pathology service was formed in May 2016, combining the North Bristol and UHBristol services into a single service for Bristol. In April 2019, the work from Weston General Hospital also moved to this department. We provide cervical screening services to the South West region and house several pathology disciplines, including the Genomics laboratory Hub, making us the lead provider of laboratory services for the South West of England.

Applicants must be registered Medical Practitioners with a licence to practice and on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be eligible to be on the Specialist Register within six months of the Advisory Appointments Committee. A Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists is required. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. The successful candidate will be employed under the Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003. The Trust has teaching status and is affiliated with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

The main responsibilities include the clinical management of patients, teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and students, and engagement in audit and collaborative research projects.
