Job summary The advertised post of Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthetics is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.The Critical Care Department ia a 12-bedded, purpose-built, mixed medical and surgical adult critical care unit, accepting approximately 1000 admissions per year. There are 6 level 3 and 6 level 2 commissioned beds, which are used flexibly, with the ability to increase bed capacity if required. The unit is equipped to a very high standard, with addition of new BBraun smart pump technology, new fully integrated GE monitoring, and new BBraun CRRT machines, all within the last 2 years, to provide comprehensive care of the critically ill patient. The department is recognized for intermediate and advanced training in Intensive Care Medicine.Consultant cover is provided by 10 WTE's with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine. There are 20 daytime weekday sessions delivered by Consultants in Intensive Care Medicine. Daytime delivery of sessions is in blocks of two to five days. The junior resident rota is staffed by a combination of Core and Specialty Anaesthetics trainees, ACCS trainees, Respiratory Specialty trainees and Foundation Programme doctors.Interviews will be held on Thursday 31st October 2024 Main duties of the job This is a new post for an anaesthetist with a specialist interest in critical care medicine. The post holder will provide high quality care for patients within the Critical Care Unit and provide perioperative care for elective and emergency patients across the range of specialities available within the QE Hospital. About us Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust is based in the North East of England and provides a range of health services. Job description Job responsibilities The role is based in the Department of Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. This service sits within the Surgical Business Unit (SBU). The SBU also incorporates all surgical specalties, Womens Health and Paediatrics. There are separate Clinical Leads for Anaesthetics and for Critical Care, working alongside Service Line Managers, and led by a Clinical Head of Service and a business unit Operations Director.A full Job Description is available in the attachments. Person Specification Qualifications Essential Full GMC Registration, with licence to practise, or eligible for full GMC registration. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia, or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training at time of interview. FRCA or equivalent. Completion of Intermediate training in critical care (or equivalent). Desirable CCT in Intensive Care Medicine or within 6 months of receipt at time of interview. FFICM or other related professional or higher qualification critical care medicine Formal teaching qualification or instructor status for relevant courses ( ALS, ATLS) Experience Essential Experience in Critical Care clinical management, including acute care of emergency patients and paediatric resuscitation Experience in the care of complex surgical patients including major abdominal surgery Evidence of independent management of emergency anaesthesia cases and upper airway management. Involvement in clinical audit and quality improvement. Experience in teaching and supervision of junior colleagues and medical students.
