JOB SUMMARY
The Museum is seeking an experienced Curator to build on the founders’ vision and to oversee and implement creative concepts, strategic vision, and branding for our rotating exhibitions, permanent collection, and related publications. This is a collaborative post, regularly interfacing with all members of the museum team, ODU faculty, students, community members, and outside donors.
- Other responsibilities include upholding best museum practices, researching and recommending new acquisitions, membership/donor stewardship, representing the Museum at professional meetings on campus and beyond and executing other administrative duties as assigned by the executive director.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires a Master’s Degree in Art History (or related field) and considerable museum or art world experience.
- Working with our team requires a strong orientation toward collaborative work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, and the ability to work both autonomously and collectively as needed.
- The candidate should be familiar with museum best practices and have working experience with project management and exhibition development/implementation.
- Superb research, writing and communication skills.
- Qualified candidates will have a high degree of professionalism, close attention to detail, collegiality, and ability to meet deadlines.
- The ability to present and engage in public speaking activities is a must.
- Ability to work effectively with artists, the university community, donors and museum constituents.
- Candidates must be proficient in Adobe Suite, and Google Suite/MS Office.
- Considerable knowledge, experience and ability to handle artwork are required.
- Demonstrated ability to develop projects that engage the collection and the Museum’s mission, and to foster a workplace culture of collaboration, diversity, and inclusion is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Art History, History, or Museum Studies with a concentration in American art.
- PhD candidates with working experience in project-based research of museum collections will be considered.
- Considerable experience with advocacy and implementation of museum standards and best practices for the care, handling, and display of works of art and historical objects.
- Preferred second language skills (French, Spanish, German, or Japanese). A strong aesthetic ability with the capacity for 3D modeling/exhibition design.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Completion of Statement of Personal Economic Interests is required upon hire.
