Job Description

This is an exciting time for Nottingham Children's Hospital as we are recruiting to an established service, with a reputation for excellence in the management of Children and Young People with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and other respiratory conditions.

Main duties of the job

To jointly lead, manage, develop and ensure the delivery of a high quality Children and Young Peoples Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Service.


You will work as a clinical expert within the field of Paediatric CF care and as a professional resource to the multidisciplinary teams in acute and community settings.


You will be working with a colleague already in post. This post also supports nursing colleagues within the respiratory team caring for children and young people with other respiratory conditions such as asthma.


The Specialist Paediatric Respiratory Nursing Team has 4 other nurses who have expertise in asthma, CF, allergy and other respiratory conditions. The nurses work closely to ensure continuity of services. The Paediatric Respiratory Nurses manage their own caseload and are autonomous in their practice.


The post holder will ideally have competency/experience or be prepared to undertake training in procedures such as Spirometry, Port-A-Cath management, venepuncture and cannulation and non- medical prescribing qualification (V300).


The post holder will also be expected to manage other staff within the respiratory service.


Whilst this is a hospital based role there will be a requirement to travel to shared-care clinics across the region. Flexibility is required to support the changing weekly demands of the service.

Job responsibilities


  • To provide specialist clinical skills, expertise, guidance, support & advice across Nottingham and the shared care areas for the CF Service.
  • Independently manage own caseload, providing care to children and families in liaison with primary and secondary care.
  • Demonstrate appropriate expert practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
  • Act as a clinical expert and role model for the childrens CF Service and the Trust, by planning and undertaking nurse led services within the speciality.
  • Responsible for the monitoring and development of policies, protocols and guidelines in conjunction with other multi-disciplinary team members, and ensure their dissemination and adoption.
  • Undertakes high level complex decision making, managing risk as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential


  • Significant post registration experience in Respiratory conditions
  • Experience in the management of patients with respiratory condition such as cystic fibrosis and asthma.

Desirable


  • Recognised respiratory qualification/training eg spirometry
  • Understanding of risk management/clinical governance
  • Understanding of audit
  • CF experience

Communication and relationship skills

Essential


  • Able to present and receive relevant clinical information to or from a multi-professional audience.
  • Good team building skills able to demonstrate how to motivate and lead.
  • Can produce timely, accurate written / electronic records and documents.

Desirable


  • Experience in forming policy and local and national level
  • Leadership module/qualification

Planning and organisational

Essential


  • Able to organise own workload.
  • Able to prioritise actions and to provide advice to the multi professional team.

Training and Qualifications

Essential


  • RN (Child) /NMC registration
  • BSc (Hons) or evidence of studying at degree level
  • Experience of teaching and assessing staff and families

Desirable


  • Recognised respiratory qualification/training e.g. spirometry.
  • Have the knowledge of, and skills to use the clinical tests available for the assessment of children with respiratory conditions.
