Job Description

A leading international law firm that acts for many of the most successful companies and institutions are seeking a compliance lawyer to lead on data protection in-house amongst other tasks. This role is on a fixed term contract for 1 year within the London Compliance team. This firm has a strong compliance culture that is promoted at partner level. They take pride in supporting the community, and all employees in the London office are encouraged to spend two days a year participating in Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Leading on data protection issues affecting the London office or its European branches, such as revising and amending firm policy, reviewing client terms and supplier questionnaires, considering data transfer issues, advising on use of standard contractual clauses, evaluating any potential data breaches.
  • Auditing existing privacy and data protection policies and procedures and advise if there are gaps or improvements to be made based on market practice, aligning with the firm’s risk management appetite.
  • Horizon scanning for new developments in data protection laws that affect the legal sector and amend policies in line with legislative changes.
  • Regularly meeting with the London office client-facing data protection lawyers to progress internal data protection projects, and liaising with their European and US counterparts when necessary.
  • Improving the efficiency of the London Compliance teams ability to respond to re-occurring data protection related queries.
  • Proactively sharing knowledge and upskilling the wider London Compliance team on data protection issues in weekly team meetings.
  • Assisting with a variety of compliance related queries relating to secondments, insider lists, contractual arrangements with clients, clearing conflicts for new matters and lateral hires, and compliance with the SRA Codes of Conduct; and
  • Assisting with developing and delivering risk and compliance training and general awareness raising amongst partners and employees.

Experience required:

  • The candidate must be a qualified lawyer.
  • Experience advising on UK data protection issues as they arise.
  • Ability to assess, draft and update policies and precedents ensuring stakeholder consultation where appropriate.
  • Experience managing projects and implementing changes to processes and procedures.
  • Experience of working at a large City/International law firm.
  • Resilience and ability to interact with people at all levels in a constructive and polite manner.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work as a team and contribute to its success.
  • Working knowledge of SRA Codes of Conduct, UK Bribery Act 2010, the UK Anti-money laundering regime, the Market Abuse and Insider Trading laws, the international sanctions regimes, and the Criminal Finances Act, is desirable.
