Job Summary


To support, monitor and maintain the databases that service all in-house and third party supplied applications as well as-designing and developing new database solutions that support the organisation's plan on a page. The database administrator role will sit within the Data team that is part of the Applications & Data Management Section. The role will be looking at performance tuning, high availability, backup, and DR across the database environments.



Job Title: ICT Database Administrator

Department: Digital Data & Technology Command - CIT

Salary: Up to £38,000

Responsible to: GIS & Data Team Leader


Main Duties

  • Provide specialist technical support and assistance to projects ensuring delivery of non-functional requirements and continual service improvement
  • Perform a wide spectrum of Database Administration using an enterprise grade RDBMS, including SQL Server & Oracle (desirable), including HA design, installation, backups, DR/recovery, security, performance tuning, patching.
  • Coach and mentor junior team members and assist in the provision of first-class services and consistent levels of capability as required by the Force.
  • Be responsible for preparation and support of IT operations solutions and services - physical or virtual
  • Perform a wide spectrum of Database Administration using an enterprise grade RDBMS including SQL Server & Oracle (desirable)
  • Manage and enhance existing database implementations to resolve issues and identify potential problems and trends, ensuring that the performance of the systems and support services remain in line with Service Level Agreements to provide a customer-focused service that meets the needs of the organisation.
  • Ensure effective and efficient system performance via database performance tuning and optimisation, using monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Document data interface protocols and detail how data and information is accessed.
  • Review database design and schema changes to migrate schema changes from development to production environments when required
  • Liaise with internal and external user groups, manufacturers, and suppliers to progress work
  • Implement the principles of data security by aligning applications and ICT products to reflect Force policy and industry best practice to assist auditing and data management processes.
  • Support both the planned activity of Programme and Project Managers to deliver new systems and services by assisting in the design and implementation of high availability database structures that support 24.7 mission-critical systems and test disaster recovery solutions for database services.


Person Specification

  • A relevant degree or equivalent industry recognised qualification
  • At least 3 years professional experience across a variety of database systems
  • At least 3 years previous technical experience using Microsoft technologies including in depth knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL
  • Able to work under pressure to meet specific deadlines
  • Able to work on his own initiatives as well as part of a team
  • To possess a full current driving licence, or access to a means of mobility support
