Role - Datacentre Engineer

Work Pattern: 5 days on site

Salary: £37k - £44k

Location: Liverpool

The Datacentre Engineer oversees the network infrastructure supporting data storage, processing, and distribution within my clients centralised computing environment. As part of a collaborative team, they handle support, maintenance, and management of centralised servers, high-performance computing, and storage systems. The role requires expertise in either Windows or Linux, with a working knowledge of the other operating system.


Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the centralised computing infrastructure to ensure a consistent quality of service.
  • Adhere to service level definitions and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Perform standard operational tasks to maintain the secure, efficient and effective running of the datacentres. This includes installing, configuring, monitoring and maintaining centralised server and storage hardware according to university standards. They also manage firmware revisions to ensure they are at supported levels.
  • Ensure that disaster recovery and business continuity procedures are developed, documented, and followed to meet agreed Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).
  • Take lead or a supporting role in configuring, managing, and developing essential operational systems and software. These include:


Windows or Linux estates (with a reasonable working knowledge of the other)

Virtual infrastructure

High-Performance Computing infrastructure

Storage Infrastructures

Backups

Server and storage monitoring

Environmental monitoring

Power management


Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in managing and maintaining datacentre infrastructure components, including servers, storage, and networking equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of both Windows and Linux operating systems. (With a preference toward Linux)
  • Network Administration: Experience in configuring and managing routers, firewalls, and virtual private networks.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues promptly.
  • Documentation: Skilled in maintaining accurate documentation related to datacentre operations.


Ideal Candidate:

  • The ideal Datacentre Engineer is a team player who collaborates effectively with colleagues to deliver high-quality IT services.
  • Expertise in favour of Linux support is preferable to bolster the overall team’s technical proficiency
  • This position has elements of out of hours work that is scheduled months in advance and this maintenance responsibility is shared between the team, so having the understanding and being flexible is ideal.
