Job Description

School of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine and Health

Are you a dentist who has a research background and is keen to gain further research experience and knowledge? Do you want to work with a group of inter-disciplinary academics and develop your clinical research skills?

We are looking to recruit an experienced dentist who will work on our community-based programme of research notably RAISED in Yorkshire (Research Activity in Schools Evaluating Dental Health). RiY is a complex intervention to improve oral health knowledge and behaviour in vulnerable communities. You will be responsible for the clinical leadership and management of the RiY programme. RiY comprises:

  1. A team of multidisciplinary Dental Health Care professionals (including Foundation Dentists) undertake RiY research training.
  2. The HCP teams then lead the training of sixth formers (aged 16-18 years) supporting them to be OH Educators.
  3. The sixth formers are assessed as competent and then go on to deliver the RiY workshops to pupils aged 7-9 years in local feeder primary and/or year 7 (Students aged 11-12 years) in their own secondary Schools.
  4. Foundation Dentists are calibrated for oral health assessments and undertake ‘before and after intervention’ assessments of the recipient Yr 3 and 4 and/or Yr 7 pupils recording their OH status, knowledge, and skills.

You will be directly responsible for leading the training of Foundation Dentists and sixth formers, assessing their competency, and coordinating the delivery in schools. You will be responsible for the conduct of the team and will lead on collecting clinical oral health measures and diagnosing dental disease from school children/adolescents in the community school setting.

The RiY research programme will be undertaken in schools in areas of social deprivation serving underserved communities with high oral health inequalities across West Yorkshire, focusing on Leeds and Bradford areas.
