We are recruiting for the role of Deputy Director - VAT and Excise to lead on a high-profile portfolio of work at the heart of HM Treasury's tax agenda.

In this role, your key accountabilities will include:

  • Playing an active role in leadership of the group through membership of the BIT Group Management Team: promoting inclusion and wellbeing, playing a visible role connecting the Group with colleagues across the Treasury, and leading on corporate projects as needed.
  • Leading the team, managing resourcing and supporting wellbeing to ensure a successful and effective team.
  • Setting strategy for indirect tax in the context of HM Treasury's objectives for the tax system as a whole, including taking advantage of flexibilities in an indirect tax regime free from EU law.
  • Advising the Chancellor and other Treasury Ministers on all aspects of the portfolio, building relationships of trust and ensuring high-quality, evidence-led advice which balances challenging objectives and priorities.
  • Building outstanding and influential relationships
  • Leading the UK's indirect tax relationships with international partners, in particular the OECD, to deliver UK priorities and shape international thinking on cross-border tax issues.
  • Negotiating with the EU to achieve specific UK objectives on indirect tax.
