Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
The diversity of our community is more than where our staff and students are from. More than 1000 of our staff and students identify as LGBTQ+, more than 1,300 have declared a disability and many members of our community follow a religion or belief.

We recognise the value that diversity brings and so we want to recruit, develop, retain and motivate an increasingly diverse workforce. We also want to attract people who will be good citizens, who will contribute to the life of the University and whose behaviour will have a positive impact on those around them.

Our Strategy sets out how we will do this through the delivery of a fair and supportive working environment for all.

The University recognises the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between work and other aspects of life and offers a comprehensive flexible working policy including a career break scheme.

We are proud to have a number of Equality and Diversity staff networks including: Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Staff Forum , Essex Women's Network , Parent's Network , Access Forum , Global Forum , LGBTQ+ and Allies Community

Department

Communications and External Relations brings together the main areas involved in leading the University's student recruitment as well as strategic positioning and profile. Engaging with students, staff and stakeholders we promote the University's excellence in research and education, and ensure its profile is communicated in a consistent way. We take an innovative and creative approach to our work and are at the forefront of new and best practice in communications, recruitment and marketing, engagement and customer service.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, energetic and proactive individual to the position of Deputy Head of Admissions (Operations and Qualifications). This is an exciting opportunity to work in a varied, team-based role within a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The role is in the Admissions team, part of the University’s Communications and External Relations section.

Duties of the Role

The primary focus of the team is to deliver a positive experience to applicants during the admissions process. The successful candidate will be part of the Admissions senior team responsible for the management of the Admissions team, ensuring the provision of a fair and consistent admissions service. They will participate in reviews of business processes and service delivery to help improve the applicant experience; have responsibility for the evaluation of qualifications; participation in planning the confirmation and clearing annual operation; providing guidance and training to other staff involved in admissions; and line management responsibility for several members of staff.

Skills and qualifications required

You will be a highly organised individual who has excellent written and oral communication skills. In addition, you will have the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritising effectively in order to meet deadlines whilst giving close attention to detail. You will also have an ability to acquire knowledge and understanding of detailed policies and procedures, and be able to interpret and apply them accurately. You should also hold a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualification or experience.

Although experience and knowledge of admissions in the HE sector would be an advantage, it is not an essential requirement as full training and induction will be provided.

At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.

To support this commitment we have our Global Forum , a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based Faith Centre , which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
