Digital Control System Engineer – SNC Corporate

We currently have an opportunity located at our Nuclear headquarters in Birmingham, AL for a Digital Controls System Engineer. This position is in our Nuclear Engineering Plant Support Organization.

Digital Control System Engineer (Birmingham)

Summary of Position Duties:

This position is assigned to the Nuclear Fleet Engineering Plant Support organization and provides digital engineering expertise and analysis for the Southern Nuclear operating fleet. The Digital Control System Engineer will strategize innovative methods to improve equipment reliability and reduce operation and maintenance costs.

Responsibilities:

  • Support troubleshooting, testing, change requests, and field installation of Westinghouse / Emerson DCS Ovation Controls.

  • Determine preventative and predictive maintenance for digital systems.

  • Develop software and hardware Life Cycle Asset Management Plan and strategy to address obsolescence and develop bridging strategies to improve reliability.

  • Be actively engaged with the DCS Design Process team to ensure Factory Acceptance, Site Acceptance and Post-modification testing are successful.

  • Provide technical input to the Fleet Digital Projects team regarding future development of Digital hardware upgrades and data highway infrastructure.

  • Coordinate with Cyber Security Group to ensure cyber protection schemes and updates have been integrated into Digital Systems.

  • Validate Digital Systems software patch management programs are implemented

  • Perform similar responsibilities for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s).

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in digital systems testing and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with Emerson Ovation Distributive Controls a must.

  • Experience with software operating system configuration and installation.

  • Experience with O.T. network/ servers, switches and media converters.

  • Experience with understanding SAMA control logic and/or function code logic.

  • Power generation systems, components, or programs experience.

Educational Requirements:

  • B.S. in Electrical, Controls, or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university preferred; however, a Bachelor of Science Degree in an engineering curriculum combined with in-depth experience in power generation and control systems will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Skilled with DCS controls, software, network switches and historians.

  • Prior experience working at, or closely with, a DCS facility is a major plus.

  • Must convey a clear vision of the future and make principled, data-based practical decisions that take critical factors into account

  • Capacity to work through conflicts to create win-win situations

  • Models high standards and holds self and others accountable for superior results

  • An ability to solve problems and make sound engineering decisions, based on experience and appropriate industry practices, in order to make timely decisions which might impact plant safety and reliability.

Other Requirements:

  • The successful candidate must meet background screening and NRC Fitness for Duty requirements.

  • Must be able to travel approximately 25% for scheduled or urgent support needs

  • Must be able to become qualified to fill Emergency ERO support role.
