Position: Director of Care

The Director of Care position is a critical role with overall accountability for the management and leadership of resident care and services as well as for our overall resident experience.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Planning, coordinating, directing and monitoring effectiveness of all operational activities within the nursing department, ensuring those activities are aligned to the home’s strategic plan, mission and values.
  2. Promotes a resident-centered care approach that engages residents, family members and employees to provide care that meets the individual needs of our residents.
  3. Overseeing recruitment, employee and labour relations, payroll and benefits, orientation, occupational and non-occupational injury/illness, performance management, training, education and other people related functions within the nursing department.
  4. Responds promptly to address concerns of residents and family members, mediates appropriate responses to those concerns and implements action plans.
  5. Provides financial leadership by managing and monitoring the nursing budget, nursing envelope expenditures and fiscal plan.
  6. Ensures effective and efficient procurement and supply control procedures within the nursing department.
  7. Providing leadership and direction to ensure all nursing aspects of a Quality and Risk Management Improvement Program are carried out in alignment with the home’s strategic plan and with a focus to continuously improve nursing and resident care services.
  8. Acts in a leadership capacity to ensure that employees within the care community foster positive customer service with all residents and families in their day-to-day work.
  9. Participates with the interdisciplinary team and in strategic planning for the home.
  10. Ensures compliance with all relevant legislation including but not limited to: Ministry Acts, regulations, policies and procedures, directives, and collective agreements.
  11. Maintains an organized system of records management for the nursing department.
  12. Seeks opportunities and networks to ensure a participative working relationship within Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), health service providers, CCAC/Discharge Planners and other community agencies.
  13. Communicates with related Long-Term Care Health Agencies to promote coordination and/or planning long term care services.
  14. Effectively builds positive relations with representatives from the Government, Unions, other Agencies and organizations as appropriate.
  15. Ensures that all required nursing committees are properly functioning within their areas of responsibility and terms of reference.
  16. Works in accordance with the organization's Health and Safety Policies and Procedures and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the provincial College of Nurses.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years’ working experience as a Registered Nurse in a managerial or supervisor capacity in a healthcare setting, preferably long-term care.
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a Registered Nurse in the long-term care sector.
  • Must have demonstrated supervisory and leadership abilities (e.g., people management, finance, labour relations and departmental coordination).
  • Must posses excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong relationship building abilities and highly proficient planning and organizing skills.
  • Sound knowledge of the Fixing Long-Term Care Homes Act 2007, Ontario Regulations 79/10.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Point Click Care and other computerized documentation systems.
  • Gerontological Nurse Certification (GNC) or equivalent post diploma education is considered an asset.
  • All applicants must successfully pass the prescribed Vulnerable Sector check.
  • Have a passion to promote person-centered care and work with the senior population.
