Job Description

The Conference Secretariat supports the Conference of Colleges, which has two main functions. It helps the Colleges, as self-governing and financially independent institutions, to act collectively on issues that matter to them.

The Conference also acts as a voice for college interests within the University community, enabling Colleges to debate and act upon the key issues of the day.


This senior leadership role operates at the heart of the Oxford collegiate system, offering experience and insight into a wide range of issues across the collegiate University.


About the Role


Leading a team of six staff, you will take forward a range of initiatives and projects, and provide expert advice on policy areas such as educational, welfare, financial and governance.


You will act as the trusted advisor to a range of senior colleagues, exercising judgement, seeking advice when needed, and handling both confidential issues and issues which need to be communicated and discussed widely.


You will also manage the work of Conference and Steering Committee along with a small portfolio of other committee work.


Supporting the Chair and Deputy Chair of Conference in their interactions with senior University and College colleagues is also key element of the role.


About You


To be successful in this role you will need proven ability to work at a senior level, offering leadership and expertise and building trust and confidence.


Having a strong understanding of policy development and implementation in higher education is essential.


A deep understanding of governance structures and the ability to navigate through complex environments to reach the agreed outcomes is also essential.


You will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to set out advice and arguments clearly, concisely and fairly.


You will also need to demonstrate first class organisational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of colleagues both internally and externally.
