Job Description

From its foundation, The King Alfred School (KAS) has stood for a nurturing and enlightened educational experience focused on what is best for the whole child, on the development of character and individuality. These principles remain just as true today as they did 125 years ago and continue to form the cornerstones of the School's ethos and vision.

KAS is an informal, co-educational, mixed ability and non-denominational day school located on the fringes of Hampstead Heath. Its independent status gives it the freedom to innovate, and advocate for educational reform. There are currently more than 700 pupils from ages 4-18 in the School. The site covers two woodlands: Manor Wood, which houses most of the School, and Ivy Wood, which houses the Reception and Year 1 classes, the design and technology centre, and the Phoenix Theatre. In 2022, the ISI's most recent inspection of KAS judged the quality of pupils' academic and personal development as 'excellent'.

The Head and Council now seek a new Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) to join the School, ideally from August 2023 following the appointment of Victoria Heeley to the role of Chief Operating Officer at University College School. This person will successfully lead a multidisciplinary team with ambition, clarity, and empathy to ensure the financial and operational functions of KAS are in full alignment with the School's vision and allow it to continue to thrive.

This is a rare opportunity for someone with ambition, an appetite to influence change in education and the ability to successfully draw together a wide-ranging team responsible for the School's financial performance and operational management. The next DFO will be someone deeply committed to the School's purpose, values and ambitions whilst also being comfortable balancing strategic imperatives and large scale projects with the requirements of day-to-day operational delivery.

Further information on KAS can be found via the School's website - www.kingalfred.org.uk
