Working together for a better borough

St Helens Borough Council is an organisation with high ambition, a place full of energy and focus, and with an exciting future ahead. Our vision is to work together for a better borough, with people at the heart of everything we do.

Having embarked on an exciting period of growth and change since 2020, a further review of the council’s leadership team has recently been undertaken. Central to our future success is the continued transformation and modernisation of our core functions, with a view to improving efficiency and customer experience. To deliver on this agenda, we seek two new leaders to strengthen and improve the way we work across the whole organisation.

As the new Director of Finance (S151 Officer), you will deliver effective financial leadership and long-term financial stability for the council, ensuring our exciting plans for growth and development are achieved via maximising funding opportunities, coupled with a commercial approach to the successful delivery of services and to ensure value for money for our residents. Not only this, but you will ensure excellence in your role through the strategic delivery of several customer-facing services, including revenues and benefits, and customer services.

This is a newly enhanced role which includes statutory Section 151 responsibilities and provides an exciting opportunity for a passionate senior finance professional to join our bold organisation. To be a success, you should be a qualified accountant and have proven experience, including from within a local authority context, alongside a track record of managing large-scale public finances in a highly effective way.

As the council enters this new era of change and development, now is a prime opportunity for our next Director of Finance to explore new commercial avenues, to make more service efficiencies than ever before, and to work with elected members and fellow senior officers to find different and innovative ways of working. Additionally, you will have oversight of the council’s multi-million pound capital programme and maximise external funding routes to unlock new opportunities across the borough and beyond.

This is a great role in a council bursting with ideas, pride, and determination. If the above appeals to you, we would love to hear from you. Together, we will make St Helens a better borough.
