Over the last 50 years, Capel Manor College has helped thousands of school leavers and adults achieve their dream of working with animals, plants and the environment. As London’s environmental college, the College plays a vital role in the green agenda for the capital, equipping the next generation of land-based sector workers with the skills and knowledge needed to preserve and protect London’s wildlife, national parks and green spaces.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced governance professional, based at our Enfield Campus and with the ability to work from home and our other locations around London.

The Director of Governance is a Senior Post Holder with a pivotal role in delivering effective governance of the College. You will be responsible to the Governing Body for ensuring that its proceedings are conducted in accordance with the Articles of Governance, the rules and regulations made under those Articles, the relevant Education Acts and the general law.

Your principal role will be to provide support for meetings of the Governing Body and its committees, which will include attending all meetings and producing detailed minutes. The wider role means using your experience and knowledge to offer guidance and support to ensure that governance is effective and meetings are productive. As many committee meetings take place remotely, you will need to be able to facilitate those using online platforms such as Zoom or MS Teams, supporting committee members as needed.

To be successful in this role, you will need a strong understanding and significant experience of corporate governance, with the ability to contribute strategically to the development of the College. You must have experience of providing authoritative advice and guidance to a board, preferably with some experience in further education; have strong written and oral communication skills; the confidence to challenge others; and knowledge of current developments in FE and charity governance.

You will ideally have a relevant degree and/or professional qualification. Previous experience as a governance professional working in the education sector (ideally FE/Sixth Form) is highly desirable.

Flexibility of working hours will be required to accommodate the Governors activity but meetings are generally planned several months in advance. Most committee meetings take place during college term time, sometimes after the college day has ended so the ability to work the occasional evening is essential.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, as well as the opportunity to work in a supportive, collaborative and beautiful land-based environment.

In order to be considered for the position, an application form must be completed. CVs will not be accepted. For further details and to apply, please visit the job vacancies section on the Capel Manor College website.

Please note that the College does not have a sponsorship licence. We are therefore unable to consider applicants who do not have the right to work in the UK.

We reserve the right to close a position once sufficient suitable applications have been received to form a short list. Early application is therefore encouraged.

What’s in it for you?

With a new Chair and many relatively new Governors and Senior Leadership Team members, the opportunity is there to help shape the future of Capel Manor on its journey to outstanding from early on.

We offer the opportunity to help develop your skills and knowledge in a friendly team environment, plus a range of benefits including generous annual leave, a defined benefit pension scheme (Teacher’s Pension Scheme for Lecturing roles and Local Government Pension Scheme for Support roles), employee assistance programme and full access to Capel Manor Gardens.

Capel Manor College is committed to creating and promoting an equal, diverse and inclusive workforce that enables those working at the College to achieve their full potential. We are committed to achieving a truly representative workforce and therefore welcome applications from all sections of the community.
