Our revolutionary Nanoimager stands at the forefront of advancing cellular studies on a molecular level, making substantial contributions to the evolution of scientific knowledge.

We dedicate ourselves to broadening the realms of human potential, and we are actively seeking an enthusiastic and devoted Director of Software Engineering to join our pioneering team located in Oxford. We believe in the power of relentless curiosity and the pursuit of excellence, and we invite you to join us in shaping the future of scientific exploration and healthcare breakthroughs.

As the key partner to the VP of R&D, this role is pivotal in developing and implementing our cloud-integrated software platform and ecosystem. You will provide overarching leadership to both software engineering and data science teams, ensuring that priorities are well-defined and balanced between feature development, code quality, and data-driven innovation. This role is critical in guiding the teams through the complexities of software and data solutions, fostering a collaborative environment that emphasizes excellence and continuous improvement.

Your Role at ONI:

  • Partner with the VP of R&D to develop, design, and lead the implementation of our cloud-integrated software platform and ecosystem, providing an extensible and modular framework that enables our users to perform data acquisition, real-time analysis, post-processing, and storage from anywhere.
  • Manage desktop software and firmware development, including architecture, embedded hardware configurations, build systems, deployment architectures, continuous integration, and feature releases.
  • Enable the team to balance the delivery of features, product roadmap timelines, with the development of modular, portable, and high-quality code while paying down technical debt and maintaining legacy commitments/software.
  • Lead the software engineering team to develop and deliver high-quality software products on schedule, following best practices in software engineering and data science, focusing on rapid delivery of valuable solutions without sacrificing quality.
  • Collaborate closely with the hardware and biochemware teams to ensure seamless integration and optimization between software, instruments, and consumables, enhancing overall system performance and user experience.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand product and business requirements and translate them into technical software requirements and tangible work plans.
  • Facilitate the highest quality of UI/UX, working with front-end, product, and design stakeholders.
  • Foster an environment where engineers thrive and grow, and promote a culture that drives autonomy, responsibility, ownership, rapid iteration, and a focus on delivering value to customers.
  • Work with technical leads to develop the long-term technical direction and roadmap for software at ONI.

Essential skills and qualifications:

  • Managed and led a diverse team of junior to senior-level software engineers and data scientists, fostering a collaborative environment that supports innovation and efficient problem-solving across both software and hardware interfaces.
  • Have successfully led the development of cross-team software projects, including both the creation of new solutions from scratch and the enhancement of existing solutions. This role requires a robust understanding of integrating software with hardware components and leveraging data science to drive innovation.
  • Demonstrated technology and personal leadership experience in successfully building highly scalable software solutions that interface seamlessly with both hardware devices and cloud technologies. This includes utilizing data science methodologies to enhance product capabilities and performance.
  • Led the hiring and growth of high-performing software engineering teams, establishing a culture of excellence that merges software development with hardware innovation and data science insights.
  • Ability to enhance coding practices, processes, execution, and deployment strategies
  • Ability to marry agile development philosophies with long-term planning of sophisticated projects with cross-functional dependencies
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to various stakeholders and audiences, including cross-functional teams, leadership, and ONI customers
  • Track record of consistently delivering meaningful results and delivering software that provides value to customers
  • Possess a strong understanding of data science and machine learning principles, applying these to optimize software solutions and drive forward technological advancements within the company.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Managed a software team at a startup
  • Developed software systems that meet requirements set by regulatory bodies or privacy frameworks (e.g. FDA, HIPAA, GDPR)
  • Led software development in the life sciences or related industry
