Job Description

We are looking for an Ecologist to join our expanding team. The role is ideally based in London or Bath with hybrid working, although our other UK office locations/home working will also be considered.

In this role, you will be able to be part of a small team that has a key influence on the outcomes of a wide variety of diverse and interesting projects across the UK and internationally – including urban regeneration schemes, helping local authorities integrate biodiversity into their climate resilience strategies, and regional-scale environmental planning and restoration projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Undertaking desk studies and assisting with site walkovers and Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
  • Reviewing site data and contributing to ecological reports for UK and international projects
  • Managing sub consultants, organising surveys and reviewing their reports
  • Identifying ecological mitigation requirements and opportunities for enhancement in accordance with planning policies and legislation
  • Preparing Biodiversity Net Gain calculations and contributing to reporting
  • Assisting with the preparation of fee proposals and marketing materials
  • Liaising with other disciplines (sustainability, water, lighting, etc.) as part of the design process, to provide robust and meaningful solutions for biodiversity, net gain, etc.
  • Undertaking basic GIS mapping (training can be provided) or more complex work if this is of interest
  • Participating in knowledge-share sessions with the team, to ensure continuous improvement of our industry knowledge and integrating this across our projects.

Your skills & experience

We’re looking for someone with a background in ecology that has some experience of working in a consultancy environment or within a public authority. Specific skills include:

  • Experience of contributing to desk studies and ecological reporting such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisal Reports, Ecological Impact Assessments, etc.
  • A working knowledge of protected species issues and wildlife legislation and guidance
  • Good report writing skills and attention to detail
  • Possess initiative and a positive attitude
  • Some experience in contributing to Biodiversity Net Gain calculations and/or reporting
  • Commitment to best practice across all our projects
  • Membership of CIEEM or willingness to become a member with the company’s support
  • No previous GIS experience is required.

What’s in it for me?

This is not a standard compliance and monitoring role, we do not generally work on major infrastructure projects or have large teams of ecologists deployed in the field, and you will not normally be required to undertake surveys outside of normal office hours. Instead, you will be a key member of a multidisciplinary project team, able to have a genuine influence over the integration of biodiversity into urban regeneration projects and wider restoration and climate resilience strategies.

The existing team’s ethos is supportive, collaborative and encourages independent thinking. It prides itself on the consistent use of best practice and thequality of its work. If you're looking to make a positive impact and create real change you will be rewarded with an excellent salary andaccess to extensive learning and development opportunities, generous pension contributions, private medical, life, dental and travel insurance, flexible leave, and other allowances.
