Who we are

McCloy Consulting is an engineering and scientific practice specialising in water and environmental engineering, with our core skills focusing on Geo-environmental Consultancy (Contaminated Land & Hydrogeology), Drainage and SuDS, Flood Risk and River Modelling.

Our Geo-environmental practice specialises in Contaminated Land and Hydrogeology providing consultancy services for a range of public and private sector clients with a diverse range of contamination, environmental assessment and protection, and water resource projects. With a healthy order book and following recent contract awards we are expanding our team.


The role

We are seeking applications to fill the role of Geo-Environmental Consultant and welcome applications from recent graduates, experienced graduates and project consultants with up to 5 years’ experience. The successful candidate will have a background in geology and/or hydrogeology and/or environmental science. Experience in a consultancy and/or site investigation supervision role is desirable but not essential.

The position is permanent and full time. The permanent role will offer a field work / hybrid office / home working arrangement, with office activities based either in our attractive head office in Mossley Mill which has easy access by train and motorway.


You will be supporting and delivering on a broad range of projects such as contaminated land risk assessments (from Phase 1: PRAs to Phase 3: DQRAs), Environmental Impact Assessments, Hydrogeological Risk Assessments, Groundwater resource investigations (from feasibility though to design, supervision of water well drilling, testing and analysis of groundwater abstractions), and other niche groundwater investigations. You will gain exposure to design and supervision of site investigations and will be required to carry out onsite supervision of contractors and environmental sampling and monitoring. The role will involve site work and travel to sites across Ireland and the UK; flexibility to travel is essential.

The candidate:

The successful individual(s) will have:


Essential Criteria

  • A degree in geology, hydrogeology, earth science, or relevant environmental discipline with a strong hydrogeology focus. Applicants should make clear in their application (including module marks) their particular strengths in geology / hydrogeology disciplines.
  • An understanding of contaminated land, pollution, contaminant transport, and risks to human health and the environment from proposed and existing developments.
  • An understanding of geological and hydrogeological controls and processes in relation to contaminated land and groundwater resource / engineering projects.
  • Ability to undertake fieldwork including soil sampling and groundwater sampling and field assessments.
  • An interest in hydrogeological modelling and numerical analysis.
  • A commitment to innovate, embrace challenges, and be proven team player with a positive “can do” attitude.
  • Strong mathematical and data / statistical analysis skills
  • Excellent verbal, technical report writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience of preparing clear and concise reports, drawings and figures to a high standard.
  • Flexibility to work across the UK and Ireland for specific projects when required.
  • Previous environmental consultancy experience in UK and Ireland.
  • Eligibility to live and work in the UK-Ireland Common Travel Area.
  • The nature of the role ensures that a full UK (or equivalent) driving licence is essential. Access to your own transport is desirable.


Desirable Criteria

  • hold or are working towards a Masters degree or other postgraduate qualification relevant to the role.
  • Consultancy experience carrying out Contaminated Land Risk Assessments / Groundwater Resource Projects
  • Experience with contaminant transport and/or groundwater flow analysis and modelling packages
  • Experience in the use of GIS (ArcGIS / QGIS / Mapinfo) or AutoCAD.
