Job summary We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic foundation level pharmacist to join our surgical pharmacy team to provide maternity leave cover for 12 months.This position is suitable for a newly registered pharmacist.You will work with our friendly team of pharmacists, technicians and support workers to provide a clinical pharmacy service to in-patients across our surgical wards. Main duties of the job This role will be predominantly ward based, working as part of a team to complete medicines reconciliation, treatment reviews and discharge prescription validation for the surgical patients at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust.Training and support will be provided by our Advanced and Specialist Pharmacists and our team of experienced technicians and support workers, which will enable the successful candidate to gain a thorough knowledge base and experience of clinical pharmacy. Job description Job responsibilities The postholder is accountable for his/her own professional actions but will always beworking under the guidance of senior colleagues who will be available forreference if required.The postholder will be required to provide pharmaceutical care to patients in variousspecialities on a rotational basis. They are responsible for ensuring that thelegal and statutory requirements in relation to medicines are met and forensuring the delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients meets both nationaland local standards.Onrotation the post holder will be required to:Carry outduties in the dispensary to help ensure that medicines are provided in atimely fashion for in-patients. These duties will include: Act as the Responsible Pharmacist in line withlocal procedure.Clinical and accuracy checking of prescriptions.Dispensing medicines.Dealing with medicines for clinical trialpatients.Ensuring adherence to medicines legislation andaccurate record keeping especially for those medicines covered by the Misuse ofDrugs Act.Ensuring medicines are selected and employed inaccordance with the Trust Medicines Policy and the Drugs Formulary.Supervising technicians and trainee pharmacists.Educating patients and/or their representativesabout their medicines.Liaising with various members of themulti-disciplinary team.Inputting patient related data into computers.Managing and prioritising own workload to tightdeadlines and ensuring urgent work is done.Moving stock when necessary.Makingstraightforward decisions relating to medicines provision.Carry outduties in the Technical Services section, which will include:Clinical and accuracy checking of prescriptions.Dispensing and supervision of others indispensing (by manipulation and reconstitution) injectable medicines (andensuring safe and appropriate disposal of sharps and other waste).Preparation and dispensing of specialformulations for external or internal use.Liaising with medical and nursing staff with aview to providing advice about intravenous nutrition (TPN) prescriptions.Handlingand dispensing medicines used in the treatment of cancer (cytotoxic medicines). Person Specification Special Knowledge and skills Essential Good written and verbal communication skills. The post holder must be equally at ease talking to patients, medical and nursing staff of all grades in both primary and secondary care and will need to present written and verbal reports to senior hospital staff. The post holder must have basic keyboard skills and familiarity with routine office software word processing, spread sheets and PowerPoint. Desirable Interprets information and provides advice. Awareness of own limitations and when to refer to others for advice. Dispensing and accuracy checking skills. Qualifications Essential Master's Degree in pharmacy obtained through four years undergraduate training. Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council achieved by pre-registration training/experience and examination. Desirable Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. Membership of the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacists Association. Personal Attributes Essential Exhibits an enthusiasm for development of the practice of Pharmacy. Possesses good verbal and written communication skills. The post holder must display an understanding of and ability to deal with the confidential and sensitive information with which they will come into contact on a daily basis. The post holder will need the necessary skills to be able to communicate complicated medication issues to patients and carers in order that they may understand and make best use of their medicines. The post holder must display an understanding and ability to communicate and deal with all patients and/or carers some of whom may have language, sensory or learning difficulties, or who may be dying or distressed because of their diagnosis or state of health. Experience Essential Experience in pharmacy practice obtained through pre-registration training and examination. Desirable Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team and experience in UK hospital pharmacy.
