Background


CSS Recycling are the leading processor and recycler of WEEE waste in the UK, through the expertise of our people and the investment in technology we promote and deliver a sustainable solution for recycling of WEEE.

Established for over 35 years we have major contracts with local authorities, utility companies and businesses alike.

As a result of new contract wins and operational expansion, we are now recruiting for a General Manager Recycling Operations to join a growing team in Newbury, Berkshire.


Role Overview


The role requirement is for an experienced, senior operations manager to lead all aspects of the management of our recycling operations, across x4 sites in Berkshire, reporting directly to our Managing Director and business owner Andrew Braysher.

The successful candidate will be leading a team of 9 Plant Supervisors, managing approximately 30 different recycling & processing lines and a staff of 75 covering recycling and machine operatives, drivers, weighbridge operators & maintenance fitters.

Tasks & Responsibilities


The GM Recycling Operations role is diverse and covers a range of operational and management responsibilities:


  • Processing & Site Operations – covering the day to day management of a large volume of WEEE recycling orders and materials across x4 sites. The successful candidate will have experience of working with Transport & Logistics, Weighbridge, Recycling Operations (various processes & machinery), Environmental Waste Compliance & Internal/Regulatory Reporting. The right candidate will have experience of developing technical and operational workflow process improvement proposals/budgets with senior managers.


  • Operatives – HR Staffing & Team Management – covering all aspects of the HR staffing requirements for operational recycling staff & Team Management across 3 busy sites. This includes management of the Processing Lines & Plant Supervisors - daily to weekly customer order/workload management, processing operations performance management, issue identification and resolution. Liaising with MD, Plant Supervisors & HR re monthly to weekly staffing budget & requirements/weekly agency bookings.


  • Management of Permanent and Agency Operational Staff - covering appraisals & salary reviews, agency timecards, staff absence, holiday & staff payments/attendance bonus/travel allowance. Strong working knowledge of operational employees’ contract terms and knowledge of HR grievance, disciplinary, dismissal processes required.


  • Supervisor & Operational Staff Training – management of all aspects of operational staff training covering technical, line and machine operations, health and safety (see below), environmental compliance and internal company staff training materials/logs and document management.


  • Plant Machine Maintenance –working in conjunction with the Plant Supervisors & the Maintenance Team to ensure that any issues or faults across all plant and recycling machinery is identified, reported and fixed in a timely manner. The machine types include -Shredders, Conveyors, Granulators, Generators, Forklifts, Grabs, Hydraulics.


  • Health & Safety –a key responsibility of the role is to manage all aspects of Health & safety across x4 sites covering safety awareness, working conditions & practices, training certification, HSE compliance, incident reporting & documentation.


  • Site Security –ensuring that all site security, access, CCTV is managed in a secure and efficient manager, communication of risks, issues and incident logs are up to date.


In additional to the operational responsibilities the successful candidate will need to have experience working into Senior Management/Leadership Teams covering: management reporting, performance tracking, P&L management, finance and budgeting, risk and issue escalation & resolution, environmental compliance reporting.


  • Internal Operational Reporting & Performance Tracking –covering preparation for and participation in workload/resource planning meetings with MD and management team, development of operational performance management reporting, metrics and KPIs, staff/team performance issues and solutions, forward planning for new lines/machinery and staffing as required.


  • Internal Management & Financial Reporting –covering all aspects of team, staffing and HR management of all operational resource as above. Experience participating in existing and new customer workload forecasting, financial and budget planning, P&L management, operational, logistics, machinery budgeting/spend tracking and reconciliation.


Skills & Experience Requirements:


  • Minimum 8-10 years - in a Senior Operations Management role managing a range of internal teams/technical, operational and management stakeholders in waste, recycling, environmental, metals, aggregates, industrial & engineering related sectors.


  • Staffing & Team Management – strong track record of managing large diverse, complex technical and operational teams in a busy working environment – covering team leadership, HR and operational staffing, problem solving, internal communication, risk & issue identification/resolution.


  • Management Reporting – significant experience working with Senior Management and Leadership teams covering internal, operational workload reporting & performance tracking, P&L management and internal financial reporting/tracking, development of proposals/budget for technical, staffing and operational process improvement, participating in finance/budget forward planning, annual/monthly budget and spend tracking.
