Brief Description

The Austin Company's UK office is looking for a qualified Health & Safety Manager with a minimum of 10+ years of experience working in the UK construction sector to join their team based in Watford, UK. We are a highly motivated multidisciplinary Design & Construction company looking to grow to meet an increased demand in the Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences, Laboratory and Manufacturing (GMP) sectors. Our projects are complex and highly serviced; they are usually in the UK with the occasional overseas exception.

What would be desirable

  • Experience in working within the Design & Construction environment on Technical Facilities
  • Familiarity with Autodesk® Construction Cloud software


What you will be doing

  • Help to maintain and update Austin’s Health & Safety/ CDM policies, procedures and discipline.
  • Introduce and implement standardised H&S procedures for all project personnel.
  • Review Designers’ Hazard Identification procedures, advise and educate them as appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with existing and changing legislation, and best practice and procedures; and communicate recommendations for enhancing procedures to all personnel in the Company.
  • Develop and issue H&S practice notes to all staff as necessary and appropriate.
  • Operate and enhance the existing system for formal appraisal of Contractors, sub-contractors, and Designers/Consultants for CDM compliance and H&S competence, leading to the maintenance of Approved lists and performance league tables.
  • Carry out appraisals, create training/awareness programme for in-house design and construction personnel.
  • Maintain H&S personnel training records and advise on training requirements for key staff.
  • Attend Design, Project Planning, Co-ordination, Pre-contract and Client meetings when required and advise on both site-specific and generic issues.
  • Carry out site visits, appraise ongoing works and subcontractors, and provide formal H&S audit and inspection reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of Pre-Construction Information Delivery (PCID) and Construction Phase H&S Plans (CPP).
  • Audit Austin Principal Contractor’s H&S plans and associated risk documentation as necessary.
  • Support the business by providing H&S information for PQQ/ Tender submissions.
  • Work closely with the Projects Director in performing duties and ensure the client relationship is developed.
  • Record incidents and accidents and carry out/ assist with investigations, formalised reports and recommendations/ improvements for implementation and subsequent monitoring as necessary.
  • Promote a positive image of H&S Management with clients by maintaining consistent contact and keeping abreast of their H&S initiatives.
  • The company annually partakes in RoSPA Awards and have achieved 15 consecutive Gold Awards, 5 consecutive President’s Awards and 1 Order of Distinction Award. The incumbent will be required to continue this initiative which involves collation of large volumes of information.
  • Foster a positive Health & Safety culture within Austin.
  • Lead and present behavioural safety initiatives on-site.
