Job Description

Are you an experienced Health and Safety professional with a strong background in infrastructure projects looking to lead safety strategies from design through to decommissioning?

Your Role

The Health and Safety Manager (Projects) is responsible for ensuring safety risk mitigation in infrastructure projects throughout their life cycle, from planning to decommissioning. The role involves advising on and implementing safe systems of work, leading safety audits, ensuring compliance with legislation, and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The manager will also ensure that all safety measures are in place before projects transition to operational stages, working closely with project teams, contractors, and senior management to maintain a strong safety culture.

Who are we?

The Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team within Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is responsible for ensuring the organization's compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards across all operations and projects. The team, which includes roles such as HSE Managers, Officers, and Coordinators, works to develop and implement safety policies, conduct audits, and manage risk assessments. The HSE team reports to senior leadership, through the Chief Networking Officer, ensuring that safety and environmental considerations are integrated into TfGM's strategic planning and daily operations.

What you’ll bring

The ideal candidate must have significant management experience in health and safety within a project environment, particularly in infrastructure projects. You should have a proven ability to influence and persuade staff at all levels to prioritise safety and maintain a positive safety culture. Strong communication skills are essential, along with experience delivering safety presentations and training. You should also have a track record of successfully commissioning operational facilities, solid IT skills, and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Experience with capital and revenue transport infrastructure projects is desirable.

This is a fixed term role of between 9 - 12 months and offers a salary of between £56,361 - £63,438 per annum depending on experience.
