Hospital Veterinary Surgeon-Penmellyn Vets, St. Columb Major Hospital Posted on 01/11/2022

Are you ready to apply Make sure you understand all the responsibilities and tasks associated with this role before proceeding.
Sometimes the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn’t mean to take……maybe a detour to Cornwall is just what you need?
Penmellyn Veterinary Group has a Hospital Vet position available due to one of our team heading off to explore the world!
What one of our hospital vets says, defines the role in a nutshell:
‘ I enjoy the hospital vet role because you get to see the whole case through, which is really rewarding. Sick animals come in, you work them up and plan (with the help of the diagnostics and surgical team where needed), then reassess them day-to-day and communicate with owners. It gives great patient and client continuity, and it’s also great for learning and professional development. There is a lot of medicine involved, some ECC and surgery, and a lot of teamwork, especially working closely with our nursing team to give our patients the best care possible’.
Penmellyn is a 6-site practice, including our main St Columb Major hospital and we have our own OOH service.
We are fortunate that we can be flexible with the role and can offer full time or part time.
Benefits - Up to 70K (FTE), 5K sign on bonus plus relocation bonus, accommodation, VDS cover, birthday leave, CPD allowance, company sick pay, up to 6.6 weeks holiday pro rata.
Penmellyn’s practices are in the heart of Cornwall, this outstanding county, and we strive to provide first class care to our team, clients, and pets alike. With our group of 25 full time Veterinary Surgeons and 50 veterinary nurses across our sites, we have an exceptionally supportive and forward-thinking team whom we are immensely proud of. We have invested heavily in state-of-the-art diagnostics equipment to include a CT scanner, ultrasound, digital radiography. We are excited that we are about to expand our hospital to include 4 modern and up to date theatres, a diagnostics suite, and minor procedures room, cat friendly ward with its own examination room, a large kennel area with 35 kennels, and separate cat and dog isolation facilities.
The role would suit a 2 year + graduate ideally, who would like the opportunity to gain valuable experience with job satisfaction because you can follow cases through from the start to the end of the patients stay. We have a dedicated ‘help hosp vet nurse’ and you have the chance to work-up your own cases and to direct to specific teams for assistance if this is required. It is a rotating position, currently shared by three vets and so would give you the opportunity when not rota’d as the hospital vet, to use your skills in surgery, imaging and consulting.
We are an enthusiastic, progressive and extremely supportive team. We have visiting cardiologists and ophthalmologists on a regular basis, making referrals easy and have our orthopaedic diplomat on hand to assist where needed.
We value your wellbeing and mental health, we provide allocated lunch breaks and time out breaks throughout the day, to rest and breathe. We try to foster an environment where no-one feels embarrassed to ask a question or ask for help. We have regular meetings to discuss cases, to improve and develop and we always have colleagues on hand who are interested, happy to discuss cases and provide reassurance with also the opportunity to also work independently.
