Job Description

Hyphen is an innovative journalism start-up focused on new and established Muslim communities in the UK and Europe. We are looking for an investigative reporter to join our growing team and produce exclusive in-depth UK stories. You will have a particular focus on issues that are relevant to British Muslims in areas including politics and social justice.

This role will report to our new deputy editor (news and investigations) and is key to Hyphen’s ambitions: we seek to produce agenda-setting, deeply researched investigations that have real-world impact and win awards.

The reporter will investigate and expose scandals that affect ordinary people, including discrimination, corruption, cover-ups and systemic failings. Areas to be investigated include health, housing, education, poverty, the climate crisis, justice and employment.

For the right candidates, we offer competitive rates and flexible working.

This role requires investigative skills such as the ability to find and build trust with sources and whistleblowers, use freedom of information and work with data.

We are looking for a highly driven and proactive candidate with outstanding research and storytelling skills and a demonstrated track record in breaking investigative stories.

Key responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research and report investigative stories from around the UK by developing and maintaining a pipeline of ideas and contacts.
  • Maintain regular and clear communication with editors to ensure all are briefed on activities and work schedules, including but not limited to attendance at editorial meetings and regular 1:1s with the deputy editor (news and investigations).
  • On an ad hoc basis, share knowledge and help more junior reporters with tips, techniques and informal mentoring.

Requirements:

  • Robust insight into issues that affect new and established Muslim communities in the UK, across political, social, economic and civil society fields.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as a reporter in local or national newsrooms, with experience of investigative journalism and a wide-ranging roster of contacts.
  • Strong news sense.
  • Experience of investigative techniques including finding and analysing public datasets and documents, use of FOI and other transparency techniques, developing and maintaining contacts, and sourcing and protecting whistleblowers.
  • Organisational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent reporting and writing skills.
  • Sound journalistic practice, such as balance, careful sourcing and a solid, practical understanding of media law.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other reporters and editors.
  • Ability to plan work, communicate well with editors and meet deadlines.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of OSINT techniques.

Benefits:

  • 30 days paid leave per year.
  • Hybrid working; split between home and office, subject to arrangement.
