We are seeking a Midwifery Manager for the labour ward, to work alongside the Maternity Matron and the Band 7 labour ward co-ordinators and patient flow team.

Main duties of the jobThis post will provide the clinical and managerial leadership with the Matron taking responsibility for providing a clear focus for the profession and effective clinical leadership and accountability for the service.
You will be responsible for ensuring that the team act in a manner that upholds the values of the Trust and that of the profession. Working in collaboration with the Matron and Specialty teams you will be expected to:
Participate in activity with the Specialist team to manage and develop the service in line with local and national requirements ensuring the delivery of performance targets
Line manage a team of staff working within designated clinical area
Work closely with Matron to ensure the efficient and effective running of area of responsibility
Have overall responsibility for ensuring their clinical area is safe
Deputise for the Matron and form part of the Directorate senior team
Contribute to the development of patient-centred services
Be responsible for successful attainment of Trust and national quality and safety objectives within area of responsibility
Provide expert clinical advice and care within the clinical area

Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesThe post holder will have continuing responsibility for leadership, supervision and management of midwives or nurses, students and clinical support workers ensuring delivery of a professional, efficient and cost-effective service, in the absence of the Matron
To maintain a high standard of evidence-based care for women and their families through
Membership of the appropriate Clinical Teams forums for development of professional guidelines, best practice and contribution to the Directorate Risk Management Strategy.
To lead on the recruitment and selection of midwifery and nursing staff for the Directorate To assist in the management of the induction and orientation of new staff to the Directorate To assist in the management of sickness according to Trust Sickness Policy.
To ensure all staff receive an annual appraisal and have clear objectives that link in with the Trust objectives in support of ongoing professional development.
To be a professional role model for others, demonstrating competent and accountable clinical practice, forming good relationships with women and their families, and presenting a positive image at all times.
To challenge poor practice, with appropriate channels of support, and ultimately to instigate any necessary competency/disciplinary procedures with the Matron or supervisor of midwives team.
To have a good working knowledge of health and safety e.g. manual handling and safe disposal of waste and sharps and to be responsible for identifying, assessing and managing potential risk
Deputise for the Matron in her absence and as required
To be able to investigate and respond to complaints in line with the Trust guidance
To ensure staff attendance at Trust mandatory updates for midwives and maternity care assistants
To be responsible for the maintenance, storage and safety of equipment.
To ensure staff are trained in the use of medical and resuscitation equipment.
To be involved in the clinical governance agenda, participating in midwifery/nursing and medical audit, investigating clinical incidents and adverse outcomes in liaison with the clinical risk team.

Person SpecificationEssentialEssential - Practicing Midwife with management experience in a relevant setting
