Business Area/Dept Overview
The LEGAL Regulatory UK team is part of the LEGAL Regulatory Platform. The Regulatory Platform (“Regulatory LEGAL” or the “Platform”) is an organisation within LEGAL comprising legal professionals providing legal advice and support to LEGAL teams, business lines, territory management, Bank general management and other Functions (including Public Affairs) throughout the BNP Paribas Group in relation to regulatory activities (“Regulatory Activities”). The Regulatory Platform is headed by the Group General Counsel as Global Head of Regulatory LEGAL (the “Global Head”), led by the Global Manager of Regulatory LEGAL (the “Global Manager”), and managed by Global and EMEA Regulatory Management Committees. There are two main Practice areas in the EMEA Region, the Client Banking & Financial EU Practice and Digital EU Practice (the “Practices”), led by Practice Leaders (the “Practice Leaders”).

The LEGAL Regulatory UK team supports UK and European regulatory topics. In relation to the UK, we advise on the UK regulatory framework, including in relation to the licensing perimeter, regulatory obligations applicable to the Group’s activities in the UK, the impact of regulatory change developments and we assist with certain advocacy efforts of the Group. This includes significant support provided to CIB activities. 

Purpose & Scope of role
• Purpose: Existing and new regulatory requirements play a key role in defining the bank’s and senior management’s obligations. The LEGAL Regulatory UK team provides advice on non-contentious financial services regulatory topics from regulatory watch stage through to implementation, as well as “BAU” advisory questions for new products / activities or ongoing business activities.
• Scope: UK role but covers European legislation in addition to UK legislation.

Key Responsibilities of role

• Providing non-contentious regulatory advice, including in relation to TACs / NACs (Transaction Approval and New Activity Committees) and dealing with queries from our stakeholders in the bank
• Supporting regulatory driven implementation projects, including attending (and representing LEGAL Regulatory on) associated governance for such projects 
• Contributing to the UK and European regulatory watch process (including through review of dashboard items and preparing impact assessments) 
• Escalating risks / issues appropriately to the Head of the LEGAL Regulatory UK team
• Completing risk reporting for risks identified by you / on which you provide support 
• Managing external counsel instructions and costs
• Delivering regulatory training as part of the Regulatory Platform’s training initiatives, as well as training provided to the London Legal team or other stakeholders
• Supporting advocacy efforts of the bank where legal interpretation is required
• Producing “know how” for product lawyer teams (e.g. TAC / NAC issue spotting guides and one pagers)
 

Experience, Qualifications & Competencies

  • English qualified lawyer with experience in non-contentious regulatory matters (approximately 2 to 6 years PQE)

• Expertise in relation to and experience advising on a number of different financial services regulations affecting the UK / Europe, for example MiFID II, CSDR, DGSD, EMIR, PSD 2, FSMA and the FCA / PRA Handbook
• CIB product knowledge
• Experience supporting regulatory implementation projects 
• Experience of managing external counsel

• Self-motivated and confident individual, able to manage a large and diverse workload and interact
with and advise different levels of stakeholders, including within CIB, LEGAL and UK territory management
• Capable of working both autonomously (escalating to the Head of the LEGAL Regulatory UK team where further support is required) and as part of a cross-disciplinary and cross-border team
• Able to support the Head of the LEGAL Regulatory UK team, other Legal teams and business teams / other functions, as well as other stakeholders of the Regulatory Platform in relation to regulatory issues
• Able to deal with a robust and demanding internal client base, including handling multiple matters simultaneously and meeting tight deadlines when required
• Ability to assimilate, digest and distil complex legal and regulatory materials and communicate these to and advise appropriately our stakeholders
• Excellent command of written and spoken English
