Lead Back-End Engineer - New Applications Team

Hybrid in London / Remote within the UK

The role

We need an experienced backend developer to join our New Applications team as Lead Backend Developer. You'll collaborate with the Product Lead to drive innovation and development in this key area of our business.

System Ownership and Influence:

  • Take ownership of key parts of our credit decisioning system.

  • Broaden the range of business possibilities and solve problems through technical innovation.

  • Drive architectural improvements across the platform, in collaboration with other tech leads, to build a cohesive platform.

  • Define and communicate your own technical agenda to champion technology and deliver our long term vision.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Build stakeholder relationships to understand and influence the business domain effectively.

  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams comprising tech, product, and analytics to deliver projects that drive business value.

  • Manage and mentor junior developers, fostering a learning environment that encourages growth and innovation within the team.

  • Lead other developers from the front, building a deep knowledge of our codebase.

The Projects

You'll be working on large mature code bases, you'll need to be comfortable learning new things as you go:

  • Reimagine and improve our credit decisioning platform to optimise customer journeys.

  • Build and maintain integrations with third party data providers to enable our credit-assessment process.

  • Constantly improve our customer application journey, leading and collaborating with team members from initial ideation through deployment to evaluation and analysis.

The team

The New Applications team is responsible for managing the customer journey from the moment they sign up through to our internal credit assessment process. This team coordinates the collection of data from external integrations with internal assessment processes and uses this to make automated credit decisions.

The New Applications team is an autonomous team with back-end, front-end, product, design, and analytics team members. As the Tech Lead, you’ll work day to day with team members in all functions and manage other developers.

The requirements

Essential:

  • Proficiency in Python, with a strong background in back-end engineering.

  • Experience with Django, PostgreSQL, and designing, building, and managing relational databases.

  • A keen interest in both maintaining and optimising current systems, and in engaging in full-stack projects.

  • Commercial awareness and product mindset.

Bonus:

  • Experience building large systems in complex business domains.

  • Experience with data analytics and Machine Learning processes.

  • An understanding of complex data systems and event-sourced data models.

  • A strong numerical or technical background, ideally with a degree in maths, physics, computer science, engineering, or a related field.

  • Front-end development experience.

The salary

We expect to pay from £80,000 - £100,000 for this role. But, we’re open-minded, so definitely include your salary goals with your application. We routinely benchmark salaries against market rates, and run quarterly performance and salary reviews.
