Job Description

Applications are invited for the posts of Consultants in Emergency Medicine and Paediatric Emergency Medicine to join our Team of 16 highly dedicated consultants.

Newham University Hospital is an east London hospital seeing over 90,000 emergency patients per year. We are a Trauma Unit with strong links with Royal London Hospital, also part of Barts Health and the Major Trauma Centre. We serve the largest borough in Barts Health, with a very young and diverse population, with a varied and interesting mix of emergency conditions.

We believe a consultant led and delivered service is key to excellence in emergency care. The successful candidate will work across all areas of the department, including our co-located Adult and Paediatric Clinical Decision Units, and Same Day Emergency Care Units (managed jointly with Acute Medicine).

Main duties of the job

We are keen to ensure all our consultants are supported to develop, learn and maintain sub-specialty interests. We believe in professional well-being and supporting sustainable work-life balance. Benefits of joining the team at Newham include:

  • Enhanced study-leave opportunities to ensure consultants have the skills and professional development needed to deliver high quality care.
  • Leadership development - Barts Health run an outstanding leadership development programme in partnership with the Kings Fund. We are keen to encourage new and existing leaders, with opportunities to apply for leadership roles both within emergency medicine and the wider trust.
  • Service and quality improvement - we are keen to support additional time within job plans (for example, 3 SPA: 7 DCC) to focus on key service and quality improvement projects.
  • Education and training - the team are committed to delivering high quality education and training, covering students, junior doctors and ACPs. Educational roles may be applied for within the trust and within job planning (such as Ultrasound Training) for interested applicants

Clinical interests and portfolio careers - we are keen to recruit applicants with a sub-specialty interest in paediatric emergency medicine. We have a separate paediatric emergency department and paediatric clinical decision unit.

The Royal London also houses one of the largest children's hospitals in the UK, a major dental hospital, and leading stroke and renal units.

We're also proud to be part of UCL Partners, Europe's largest and strongest academic health science partnership. The objective of UCL Partners is to translate cutting edge research and innovation into measurable health gain for patients and populations through partnership across settings and sectors, and through excellence in education.
