Job Description

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic individuals with sub-specialty skills that will complement those of the existing Gastroenterologists to work alongside and in conjunction with us in outpatients, endoscopy and our Gastroenterology Ward. This is an exciting time to join to The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust we now have a new 3rd endoscopy suite and with a new hospital being built. The post holder will have the opportunity to shape and develop the service for the local population and have input into how the service works out of a brand new facility. The department have recently developed a ten year strategy programme which the post holder will be involved in developing and delivering. It is essential that the successful candidate is competent in the effective management of a wide range of Gastroenterology conditions within the outpatient setting in order to see, treat and discharge patients in a timely manner.

Main duties of the job



Skills and experience in endoscopy (including therapeutic skills) is essential with JAG accredited competence in upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy. The post holder will work flexibly during the week with a prearranged timetable (including a 1:6 weekend GI bleed rota) to accommodate clinics to support the wider service and occasionally backfill in endoscopy. They will also support a 1:6 week ward cover rota.



There has been a substantial investment programme in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy which includes funding of additional new posts of a Nurse Endoscopist as well as new equipment for the Endoscopy Unit.

The IBD team has 2 IBD CNS' and a Specialist Pharmacist to support the management of our IBD patients. Job description

Job responsibilities



The responsibilities in outline will be:



  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients with gastroenterological and liver disease.
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of outpatients attending PAH and outlying clinics at SMH and HEH.
  • To provide safe and high quality inpatient cover through the role of GOW (currently 1week in 5 moving to 1 week in seven when appointments have been made).
  • Participate in the GI bleed on call RotaProviding a safe and high quality endoscopy service. Diagnostic and therapeutic Upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy skills are essential and JAG accreditation for these.
  • ERCP skills are not essential however candidates with this experience would be welcome to pursue this role.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students attending the Department of Gastroenterology and General Medicine.
  • Actively participating in both Departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
  • Responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
  • Research or quality improvement activity, which may be tailored to the needs of the applicant.

  • Gastroenterology Experience
  • Satisfactory completion of previous posts providing professional training in Gastroenterology

Desirable



  • NHS Experience
  • JAG accredited

Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • MRCPCH or MRCP or show evidence of equivalent training and experience
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register or a Specialist Registrar within 6 months of the award of their CCT in Gastroenterology of the date of interview
