Job Description

The General Paediatric Department at the Royal London Children's Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, is seeking to appoint a six-month fixed term locum Consultant in General Paediatric Medicine with a special interest in Paediatric Cardiology.

This is a 10PA post to support the provision of Paediatric Cardiology service. Since the appointment will be a General Paediatrician with expertise in paediatric cardiology (PEC), the post will be split between PEC duties (60%) and General paediatric duties (40%) which will be primarily based at the at the Royal London Hospital site, however occasional cross site working with in Barts Health may be needed. The post will have an overall DCC:SPA split of 8.5: 1.5 initially.

The post is based at the Royal London Hospital located in Whitechapel, London. The Royal London is part of Barts Health NHS Trust (Royal London Hospital, Barts Hospital, Mile End, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals) which is now one of the largest trusts in the UK. The trust has close links to the other district general hospitals in the North East London area and provides a tertiary referral service. It is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should maintain appropriate CME accreditation. Applications will be considered from those unable for personal reasons to work on a full-time basis. Any candidates wishing to work on a part-time basis should indicate this when submitting his/ her application.

The appointment is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service of Barts Health NHS Trust and is subject to the National Health Services (Superannuation) Regulations.

The full time basic salary for the first appointment of an NHS Consultant is 88,364 + inner London weighting, excluding payment for agreed additional programmed activities. Part-time doctors will be paid pro rata, based on the number of agreed weekly Programmed Activities in the Job Plan. Salary on commencement and subject to progression will be in accordance with the Terms and Conditions

Significant new clinical services may only be developed after agreement has been reached with the relevant management team and the financial arrangements approved

It is now NHS policy that all new staff with patient contact will require satisfactory disclosures from the Criminal Records Bureau. The Medical Workforce department will therefore seek disclosures for all new medical appointments. The Trust must check the criminal background of all employees. Candidates must provide information on application relating to any criminal convictions they have had, even if they are spent for other purposes. Posts in hospitals are exempt from the provisions on Section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemptions) Order 1975. Qualifications
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent degree
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • On GMC Specialist Register in Paediatrics or within 3 months of CCT
  • On GMC Specialist Register in Paediatrics or within 3 months of CCT
  • SPIN in Paediatric Cardiology (or equivalent training)

Desirable

  • Congenital Heart Disease Echocardiography (CHD) Certification

Experience
Essential

  • Up to date APLS/PALS
  • Level 3 Safeguarding
  • Experience in Paediatric Cardiology
  • Broad range of clinical experience in Acute General Paediatrics
  • Higher specialist training in Paediatric Medicine

Desirable

  • At least six months of PICU at middle grade level

Skills and Knowledge
