Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psycho-oncology to work with the Right by You team at UHS. The post is funded by Macmillan to be part of the wider team, delivering complex psychological approaches to care across primary, secondary and community services.

The post holder will be an integral part of the development of integrated support models for Wessex and the accompanying evaluation with the University of Southampton. The clinical focus will be part of the escalation model for one-to-one psychological support, utilising ACT, CALM or CBT informed approaches to care.

This is a 12 month contract which we anticipate will work closely with the Service lead and project manager to inform the business case for commissioning the service.

Key Responsibilities
  • To lead in delivering the complex psychological care provision in the Right by You service for Southampton City across organisational boundaries.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of the current service model, care pathways, and acuity of the patient group and map out a comprehensive service to meet the growing psychological service need in cancer above level 2 for Right by You.
  • Provide complex interventions to cancer patient and their families, drawing on extensive expertise in ACT, CALM and CBT based approaches to care.

Job responsibilities

General Duties
  • Act as an expert Clinical Nurse Specialist in complex psycho-oncology, demonstrating advanced level clinical practice (as defined in ACCEND), supporting complex decision-making and multifactorial assessment, in the management of complex psychological clinical needs of patients with cancer across Southampton Hospitals and its partner organisations.
  • Order appropriate clinical investigations to support treatment and integrated care pathways if appropriate, for the service and onward referral to clinical psychology and psychiatric services.
  • Make and receive referrals.
  • Provide complex psychological interventions to patients and their families- above NICE level 2 and escalate to level 4 services where appropriate. Ensuring the low-mood pathway is an integral part of the assessment process.
  • De-escalate the need for specialist psychology services where appropriate and manage that caseload independently, out of hospital where possible.
  • Provide complex therapeutic interventions for patients experiencing psychological trauma as a consequence of their cancer diagnosis, in settings which those individuals express a preference for eg home.
  • To join the integrated multidisciplinary care team and attend their meetings to enhance the planning and management of care.

Person Specification

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential

  • 1st Level Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC Register
  • MSc in psychology or related subject
  • Additional training in ACT, CBT, CALM therapy
  • Articulate with highly developed communication skills with the ability to network and build relationships at all levels, including interpersonal skills, liaison and negotiation skills. Writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent high level leadership skills
  • Advising and influencing
  • IT skills and ability to develop these skills further
  • Ability to prioritise work and adapt to changing deadlines
  • Able to develop and implement policy, guidelines and projects from initiation to completion
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Able to work independently and meet tight deadlines
  • Travel across sites
  • Ability to work flexible hours and fulfil commitments of on-call / site management role
