Marketing Communications Executive

We're looking for an ambitious, creative all-rounder, with experience in marketing and content development particularly website, SEO, social media and copy writing. You'll have experience working on integrated campaigns across advertising, social media, media and partnerships that achieve the organisation's goals and objectives. You thrive working in small organisations, where no day is the same and you have the opportunity to contribute to all areas of the organisation. You'll ideally have an interest in sustainability and behaviour change too.

We are an independent not-for-profit made up of a small but creative, hard-working team with big ambitions to get the UK reusing and recycling their electricals. We work collaboratively with everyone from local authorities, businesses, and researchers to influencers, community groups and recycling professionals to amplify our message and save precious resources from being lost forever. This is an opportunity to work for an award-winning environmental organisation that is gaining significant media and political interest.

Background

We buy more and more electricals every day - but too often the old stuff we no longer want, use or need is thrown away in household bins. We throw away a staggering 155,000 tonnes of electricals every year in the UK, and hold onto around £5.6 billion worth in our homes. This is contributing to one of the fastest growing sources of waste in the world and the UK: electrical waste.

Discarded, unwanted electricals that are thrown away pose a major threat to the environment and human health. Electricals also contain some of the most sought-after resources on the planet, like gold, silver, copper, lithium, palladium and platinum, which are lost forever if they're thrown away.

Anything with a plug, a cable or a battery can be recycled - and over 75% of the materials can be reused so that we don't have to mine for new ones.

The organisation

Material Focus is an independent not-for-profit established to help the UK meet its electrical reuse and recycling targets. We fund technical research on the barriers to recycling; work with partners to improve the current systems; and inspire people to change their behaviour through our nationwide 'Recycle Your Electricals ' campaign.

Campaign objective

We throw away small electricals without even thinking about it, or perhaps we consider it but we're too busy, and what would we do with it anyway? We need to stop people in their tracks, and give them a reason to think about it, talk about it, and do the right thing. We want to clarify what people should do, motivate them and make it mentally easier for them to act through a mix of behavioural interventions which we'll be testing - like new kerbside recycling schemes, schools education & collection programs, and office collection trials.
