We have a new opportunity to be part of the Materials team in the role of Materials Technician.


Working in the Material’s Group and reporting to the Head of Structures, the Material Test Technician will be responsible the mechanical testing of metallic, non-metallic and composite materials, metallographic assessment of metals and sectioning of composite components and adhesive joints as part of failure investigation studies. The Laboratory Technician will also carry out analytical work using FTIR, DSC and DMA equipment. This work will support the Design Office in their choice of materials, quality in ensuring compliance and production in maintaining a current database of material choices.


Responsibilities

  • To carry out routine mechanical testing of metallic, non-metallic and composite parts.
  • Operate and maintain the universal tensile test machine for routine and project-based development work.
  • Prepare adhesive bond and composite test samples for mechanical test purposes.
  • To carry out routine metallographic assessment of metallic samples for additive manufacturing routine testing and development work.
  • To section and prepare materials for component examination for further failure investigation and analysis.
  • Record and photograph failed components using cameras and optical microscope equipment as part of materials development projects and failure investigation studies.
  • Ensure all test results are recorded using agreed laboratory database procedures.
  • Analyse routine and non-routine organic samples using the FTIR, DMA and DSC analytical equipment.
  • Continuously develop skills and knowledge to industry standard.


Essential skills and experience

  • Have relevant experience in a laboratory test and/or material analysis environment.
  • A track record of delivering results.
  • Be able to demonstrate a good understanding of composite and metallic materials, both properties and processing.
  • Some experience of data management.
  • Effective task management.
  • Microsoft Office competent.
  • Teamwork skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Be flexible, pragmatic and resilient.
  • Ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to Health & Safety
  • A high level of attention to detail, a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and a flexible ‘hands-on’ approach to workload and hours is essential


The hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm 1 hour for lunch but additional hours may be required as work dictates.
